Coves, a fragrance garden and island trails
Lošinj’s many coves have low, easily accessible shores that are mostly rocky. In some places, white pebbles cover the beach, gradually giving way to a sandy seabed. These variations give the coastline its diverse character. Around Lošinj and the nearby islands of Ilovik, Susak and Unije, there are also snorkelling spots with underwater landscapes, colourful fish, Posidonia oceanica seagrass meadows and hidden coves.
There is nature to discover inland, too: the Lošinj Fragrance Garden is home to more than 250 native aromatic plant species. Traditional dry-stone walls, known as gromače, enclose its planting areas. The garden offers fragrance walks, workshops, tastings, exhibitions, performances and competitions. This means that, alongside experiences by the sea, plants and scents are also in the spotlight.
Hiking and cycling to suit your preferences
The Lošinj archipelago has hiking and cycling trails of varying lengths and difficulty. They lead to viewpoints, beaches and coves, fishing villages, secluded chapels and villages, shepherds’ shelters and old military fortifications. Your choice can therefore be guided by the activity you prefer, as well as the distance and level of difficulty; there is no single route that represents the whole range.
One specific route is the Osoršćica–Nerezine hiking traverse. It runs for about 10 kilometres along the northern part of the island and reaches an elevation of 588 metres at Televrin. Below the summit are the church of Sv. Mikula and the cave of Sv. Gaudencija.
Discover seafaring and culture
Providenca is a cultural landscape on Umpiljak Hill above Mali Lošinj. It interprets Lošinj’s natural, cultural and maritime heritage. A self-guided walk with six interpretation points explores Lošinj as an island of captains. The Captain’s Table is a fitting addition: the picnic includes a basket of local specialities connected with the island’s captains and maritime past.
In Mali Lošinj, the Museum of Apoxyomenos was built as a permanent home for the sculpture. The Tower displays a life-size replica of the Apoxyomenos, a bronze sculpture discovered in the waters off Veli Lošinj. The Kula (The Tower) Museum and Gallery Centre in Veli Lošinj dedicates its permanent exhibition to the island’s maritime tradition and seafaring history. In different locations, both the sculpture and Lošinj’s relationship with seafaring are therefore in focus.
The exhibition aboard the Nerezinac also tells the story of maritime history. Its three sections cover crew life, food and cargo, maritime routes, and shipbuilding. The Nerezinac is included on the Republic of Croatia’s list of protected cultural heritage.

Lošinj can be reached by land, sea or air. The island’s larger ports include Mali Lošinj, Veli Lošinj and Nerezine.
