The Church of St. Barnabas stands in Vižinada and is Istria’s largest church with two apses. It was built in the Romanesque period in the 12th or 13th century.
Culture and History
Dating from the transition between the 16th and 17th centuries, Kuća Maraston serves as a visitor centre and presents the history of Vižinada through multimedia content. Fontik (Kuća “Lav”) is the oldest surviving public secular building in the town and was built in the 15th century.
During the restoration of the Church of St. Barnabas, around thirty Glagolitic and Latin graffiti were uncovered. They document the names and details of former residents. The Vižinada cistern was built in 1782 to a design by the Istrian architect Simeone Battistelle and features Baroque ironwork by local blacksmiths.
Fontik (Kuća “Lav”) also preserves a tariff table from 1726 that regulated duties on trade and shipping on the Mirna. The frescoes in St. Barnabas depict the life of Christ from the Nativity to the Resurrection and also include a representation of the Last Judgement.
In the surrounding area is the Church of St. Mary in Božje Polje. It was built in the 15th century on the site of an earlier sacred building and monastery. The figures in the sanctuary are among the largest in Istrian fresco painting. The Church of St. Jerome dominates the main square; the single-nave neoclassical building was constructed between 1837 and 1840.
Trails and Landscape
The Parenzana is a reconstructed sports and leisure trail on the former railway line through Istria. The former Parenzana railway route was converted into cycling and walking trails. The Trail of Scenic Views begins at the southern entrance to Vižinada, next to the 13th-century Church of St. John the Baptist, and leads to a life-size model of the U20 locomotive that once ran on the Parenzana.
The Istrian section of the Parenzana runs through valleys, green hills, vineyards and olive groves, offering views of medieval towns. The Sabadin or St. Vital Viaduct on the Trail of Scenic Views is 64 metres long and 20 metres high. The trail reaches its highest point at 353 metres above sea level; from there, the views extend across the hills on both sides of the Mirna.
The Heart of Vižinada hiking trail is 5.9 kilometres long, classified as less difficult and listed as taking two hours. The Vižinada cycling route (101) is 24 kilometres long, connects with other trails and includes five designated photo points.
Cuisine and Events
The recurring Slatka Istra event presents traditional Istrian sweet specialities such as pandešpanj, pinca, bucolaj, povetica, fritule, cukerančići, kroštule, briskve and paštine as part of a living culinary tradition.
The Parenzana Recreational Bike Marathon takes place annually in Vižinada in mid-September. The route is 46.7 kilometres long and is accompanied by a walking tour of approximately ten kilometres.
The 30-kilometre Staza dobrih okusa i doživljaja cycling route runs through agrotourism areas and past wine roads, olive oil roads and cultural monuments. It begins at a viewpoint near the former entrance to the Parenzana railway route. In Vižinada, visitors can taste local olive oils; almost every farm there grows olives and produces oil. A mill in Vižinada sells homemade, freshly milled flour.
