Archaeology and history at Vižula and in Banjole
The Vižula peninsula lies in the heart of Medulin and is home to the multimedia Vižula Archaeological Park. Its archaeological traces cover 26 hectares and span periods from the Neolithic through Late Antiquity to the early Middle Ages. Visitors can also attend an archaeology school in the park. Information boards in Braille and a round tactile map are also available. Vižula thus offers various ways to explore the area’s long history and archaeological work.
In Banjole, the Park of the History of the Municipality of Medulin presents the history of the Medulin Riviera from prehistoric times to the present day. The open-air museum is also an outdoor gallery. Information in Braille and audio interpretations are available for people with disabilities, people with reduced mobility, and blind and visually impaired visitors. Those interested in local history will find a different perspective here than on the archaeology-focused Vižula peninsula.
Near Vinkuran lies Cave Romane, an ancient quarry. As early as Roman times, stone was extracted there for, among other things, the construction of the Pula Arena. Today, its steep rock faces serve as an acoustic stage for numerous concerts. In Pomer, meanwhile, residents organise a folk festival in summer, and classical music concerts are held in the churches. These examples show different facets of local history and culture, from the extraction of building materials to community events.
Nature trails and discoveries on Kamenjak
The municipality includes four protected areas; one of them is Donji Kamenjak and the Medulin Archipelago. Gornji Kamenjak is a protected landscape where 487 different plant species grow. Alongside its natural features, it also has palaeontological and Austro-Hungarian relics. The Gornji Kamenjak viewpoint trail starts at the car park at the entrance to Premantura. The walk is eight kilometres long; allow about an hour and a half. Along the way, the trail passes a defensive bay built by the Austro-Hungarian army during the First World War to protect Pula and its surroundings from the Italian army.
On the Grakalovac peninsula, a hiking trail leads to a site of fossilised dinosaur footprints in the Donji Kamenjak and Medulin Archipelago area. Another trail, Gradina on Gornji Kamenjak, is designed for sensory and educational experiences and adapted for blind and visually impaired visitors. If you would like to explore different nature and history themes during your stay, you can treat these trails as separate destinations without combining them into a single route.
Cycling, water and coastal towns
There are several named routes for cycling. The Premanturka cycle route starts at the entrance to Premantura and crosses a small bridge near Šćuza on its way to Pomer. Cycle route 315, the Medulin Riviera, starts and ends on Medulin’s waterfront promenade. The Orhideja cycle route starts at a car park at the entrance to Premantura and heads towards the protected Kamenjak landscape. Their different starting and ending points make it easier to choose a ride based on your preferred starting location.
In Školjić Bay, visitors can rent kayaks, explore the Medulin Archipelago, and try SUP and windsurfing. At Munte Beach in Premantura, facilities are adapted for blind visitors and people with reduced mobility: a ramp and wide steps with a handrail lead to the sea. Bijeca in Medulin is a one-kilometre-long sandy beach that attracts families with small children. These coastal spots offer specific reasons to include time by the water and beach in your holiday plans.
Local experiences and towns in the municipality
At Istarska Farma on Kamenjak, visitors can see donkeys, chickens, pheasants, ducks, parrots and Boškarin cattle. Its food offering includes homemade specialities made with fruit and vegetables grown on the farm or at neighbouring farms. It is open from late spring through summer. Its seasonal opening is one factor to consider when planning your travel dates.
