Culture

Gradišće preserves a group of houses with baladurs dating from the beginning of the 19th century. According to local tradition, Stari Žminj was located on the hill above the Gradišće settlement. At the entrance to Gradišće from Žminj stands a Matica family chapel: Antonio Matica had it built in 1929, and it was made in a local workshop in Valdedija. A chapel in Gradišće bears the dedication “Srce Isusovo i BDM” and is dated 1901. At a Gradišće chapel from 1929, an inscription contains the names Matica Fradelan, Antonio and Vila Gradiscie. Stone from the Gradišće quarry was used for the slender columns of St. Michael’s parish church in Žminj.

Geographical location

The surroundings of Gradišće include Dvigrad Castle, Soardo-Bembo Palace, Standar, Veliki Breg, Trba and Sveti Andrija. In the wider regional area are Vižače and Škaraba.

Landscape

In the vicinity of Gradišće, Route 147 passes the Kingdom of Festini cave, which features stalactite formations, and continues through the Cere forest. A clearing beyond the forest offers views of the peaks of the Učka mountain range. Along this route, you encounter the Chapel of St. Anthony of Padua from 1734, known as Pilj. The Church of St. Fosca is also located on Route 147; its original small church building dates from the Byzantine period of the 6th century. The route also passes Klenovica Pond, formerly known as the Lake of Love. It also passes the Varine, which are considered large artificial pits left behind by abandoned flint-sand mining.

Cycling

Cycle Route 761 Žminj–Feštini runs through Gradišće; the place is also known as old Žminj. The “U srcu zelene Istre” cycling route includes Gradišće in its loop, which runs from Kanfanar via Modrušani, Benčići, Rudani, Balići, Batlug and Katun. Cycle Route 283 is a 37-kilometre-long, easy route ridden entirely on asphalt.
