Šćulci: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

Šćulci offers views of Lake Butoniga from the slopes of Vrhuvšćina. The section of Motovunska šuma in the Butoniga Valley stretches from the confluence of the Mirna to the hamlet of Šćulci below Breg Hill. Motovunska šuma is a habitat for truffles, including the white truffle Tuber magnatum, and has aesthetic and recreational value for the surrounding area.

Šćulci is also associated with basket weaving from willow branches – an almost forgotten traditional craft practised in Istria by one of the few craftspeople of its kind.

Nearby lies Vrh with its parish church, built in 1231 and bearing Glagolitic inscriptions from 1463 and 1552. South of Vrh are the ruins of the Church of Saint Cyriacus, with visible walls and an apse still preserved. At the twelfth edition of the “Vrhuvšćina, mili kraj” festival held in Vrh in June, musicians playing traditional instruments from Šćulci took part.

The Gunjci tradition associated with Šćulci uses the bass and violin; a small clarinet was later added to the ensemble. The Gunjci from Šćulci traditionally performed at church celebrations, folk festivals, village fairs, Šagres and Osmices.

Local Specialities and Experiences

A truffle experience near Šćulci includes a visit to the Karlić family and a search with trained dogs. The family’s truffle adventure also includes a guided tour of the truffle museum, a search accompanied by a licensed truffle hunter, as well as local wine and homemade dishes.

A local tradition in Šćulci during Carnival involved Plenke: fried dough sprinkled with coarse sugar. A woman originally from nearby Šćulci has been making Kroštule in Vrh for 54 years.
