Zagreb’s historic centre developed during the Middle Ages on two hills: the secular Gradec, now the Upper Town, and the ecclesiastical Kaptol. The Stone Gate is the only surviving gate into medieval Gradec.

The Croatian National Theatre in Zagreb is Croatia’s oldest theatre institution and officially began operations on 24 November 1860. The funicular connects the Lower Town and Upper Town and is the oldest organised vehicle in the city’s public transport system. Its 66-metre route is described as the shortest among public funiculars in the world. It retains its original exterior appearance and original construction and is legally protected as a cultural monument.

The Zagreb City Museum covers the city’s cultural, artistic, economic and political history, from Roman finds to the modern era. The permanent exhibition presents Zagreb through political, religious, historical, economic, architectural, cultural, leisure-related and everyday themes. The exhibits also include archaeological remains of a prehistoric settlement from the 7th century BC and a house with a workshop from the La Tène period. The Museum of Broken Relationships displays exhibits shaped by personal experiences, local culture and history.

Nature

Maksimir is a historic landscape created at the end of the 18th and beginning of the 19th century and opened to the public in 1794. The park is described as one of the first public parks in Southeast Europe. Covering 316 hectares, Maksimir is a protected monument of park architecture and cultural heritage featuring forests, meadows, lakes and streams. The documented birdlife includes more than 100 species.

The Jarun recreational centre preserves a wetland and marsh community with around one hundred bird species, as well as diverse wildlife including fish, aquatic animals and insects. The site includes two lakes, five interconnected islands and approximately 2,500 metres of pebble beaches. There are also long walking and cycling paths, sports fields, a 6,500-metre fitness trail, roller-skating facilities and a cycling course.

The Zagreb Botanical Garden is part of the Green Horseshoe park system. It covers approximately 4.7 hectares and has an English-style arboretum; its spring exhibition features more than 5,000 plant species.

Cuisine

At Dolac, visitors can see, sample and buy products from individual producers and family businesses. Dolac Market has open-air stalls for fresh produce and dairy products, a covered section for meat and dairy products, and a separate fish market.
