Municipality of Pušća: Hills, churches and wine tradition

The Municipality of Pušća is characterised by the hills of Marijagoričko pobrđe, churches with varied historical influences, and a wine tradition that is also evident in local projects and events. Hills and cycling routes

Pušća features the dynamic hills of Marijagoričko pobrđe, with larger, largely preserved areas of aesthetic and natural landscape value. This gives the municipality a distinct landscape character, separate from its individual cultural sites. These include the Marija Gorica–Brdovec–Pušća route and the Kupljenovo–Luka–Dubravica–Marija Gorica–Pušća route. Their named itineraries differ: the first passes through Marija Gorica and Brdovec to Pušća, while the second also names Kupljenovo, Luka and Dubravica. Both lead to Pušća according to their names; Marija Gorica features in both. Route lengths, elevation profiles and other characteristics cannot be inferred from the route names. Nevertheless, they provide a concrete starting point if cycling tourism is something you would like to include in your trip.

Churches and cultural monuments

On Crikveni brijeg, the Stations of the Cross, Staza života–Križni put, run along the slope between the parish church of Sv. Juraj and the church of Majka Božja Čiselska. The chapel of Majka Božja Čiselska stands on a hill above the parish church in Donja Pušća and is a protected monument of the zero category. The parish church of Sv. Juraj also reflects different phases of construction: it was originally Gothic and was later given a Baroque style. The old school building offers a different view of the town centre. It stands in the centre of Donja Pušća on the main road below the hill with the parish church. Pušća itself is also home to the statue of St Florian, a late Baroque stone sculpture of artistic and cultural-historical value. Together, these buildings and the stone sculpture offer different cultural and historical points of interest, though they do not all belong to the same period.

The parish church was damaged in the earthquake of 29 December 2020. The chapel of Majka Božja Čiselska in Donja Pušća was closed because of the damage while restoration work was underway.

Wine and local produce

As part of the InterWine project, Vinski podrum Pušća brings together cultural heritage and the tradition of grape growing and winemaking. Alongside the landscape and architectural history, local wine culture is therefore another of the themes that define the Municipality of Pušća. In October 2025, a wine cellar opened in the Municipality of Pušća as a venue for presenting local wines and products from family farms.

Another example with a clearly specified date is Jurjevski fruštik 2024. The gathering was followed by the traditional Salamijada and the Festival of Wine and Cheese. This event highlights the connection between social gatherings and regional food, but it was a specific programme in 2024, not an indication of an annual event.
