Danube arms, historic places and trails through a distinctive landscape define the Municipality of Draž at Croatia’s northeastern tip. The area encompasses the Danube, its former river courses and side arms. A trip here therefore offers a variety of experiences: time by the water, hikes and insights into the culture of the local Šokci.
Water landscape and fishing waters
The Draž area has more than 400 hectares of fishing waters. Organised fishing trips by boat are also available from Batina on the Danube and its side arms. Those interested in this kind of experience can find a direct connection to the river area; these trips are distinct from the Municipality’s other riverside and cultural attractions.
Another waterside spot is the beach on the Topoljski Dunavac in Draž. Its features include a large sandy beach and wooden piers. The Šokac Embroidery Trail starts at Draž beach on the Old Danube Arm and passes rows of traditional wine cellars known as Gatori. Draž is also home to the Piki Beach Bar by the Danube side arm Topoljski Dunavac.
Hiking trails and steep-sided gullies
The Baranjska planinarska obilaznica is considered the best-known hiking trail in the Draž area. Another named route is Baranya’s Natural Trails: The „Surduci“. It starts at the Veliki drumić („surduk“) pass in Draž and passes the Trojnaš viewpoint.
The Surduci themselves are steep, natural gullies cut into the terrain over centuries by rainwater. Their shape and formation give this landscape feature a tangible meaning. The Deer & Bike cycling event, held every June in the Municipality of Draž, is also part of the active leisure offering; it is organised by the Karašicka republika association.
Šokci culture and a Baroque church
The Šokačka kuća in Topolje near Draž presents the tangible and intangible culture of the local Šokci at its place of origin. You can explore it through the play Eva i Stipa and an audio guide. This offers a distinct cultural highlight, separate in theme from the river and trail landscapes.
The Baroque church of Sv. Petra i Pavla also stands in Topolje, built in an open field in 1722. Prince Eugene of Savoy had it built in gratitude for his victory over the Turks. The church hosts the event Marijo, svibnja kraljice on the last Saturday in May, dedicated to preserving Baranja’s religious folk singing.
Batina: riverfront, remembrance and views
In Batina, the passenger pier is located on the Danube waterfront in the town centre. Above the Danube is a viewpoint from which visitors can see Croatia, Serbia and Hungary. A visit to the Batina Battle Memorial includes the Victory Monument, created by Antun Augustinčić in 1946.
Next to the Victory Monument is the Panorama Café and Wine Bar. It serves coffee, soft drinks and wines from Baranja winemakers.
