Municipality of Semeljci: Streams, Lakes and Traditions

On the northern edge of the Đakovo Plain, the Municipality of Semeljci brings together waterscapes, archaeological history and festivals that showcase local customs. The streams Brána and Semèljčica flow through Semeljci; the Semèljčica flows into the Brána. Lakes are also part of the municipality’s character: each of its settlements has a prepared lake that can be reached by vehicle. History and Devotion in Semeljci

The history of the settlement goes back a long way. A prehistoric settlement with semi-pit houses dug into the ground was discovered in Semeljci. It dates from the Neolithic and Late Bronze Age and is attributed to the Starčevo or Sopot culture. These finds give the settlement an archaeological dimension distinct from its later ecclesiastical traditions.

For centuries, an image of Our Lady of Częstochowa, known as Semeljačka Gospa, has been venerated in the Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The church was a pilgrimage site; three-day novenas were held before the feast on 8 September. The present-day parish church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary was built between 1784 and 1788 between Semeljci and Kešinci. Festivals, Music and Local Customs

Several events give the settlements’ annual calendar its own character. In Koritna, the cultural association Vesela Šokadija holds the festival “Poklade su, milo janje moje” every year during Carnival. Easter Monday also sees the Easter horseback ride: around 50 riders from the municipality and surrounding places take part. In June, the Zec Hunting Association from Semeljci, or its group in Koritna, organises a clay pigeon shooting competition with team and individual categories. The three events are quite distinct—from the Carnival festival and Easter custom to a sporting competition.

Music, singing and traditional customs also shape cultural life. The vocal group Semeljačke snaše preserves traditional singing, folk customs, crafts and traditional costumes in the Semeljci area. On the eve of St John’s Day, the cultural association Lipa keeps the Ivanje–Lilanje tradition alive, featuring depictions of jumping over the fire and Lilanje. In October, the municipality’s tamburica orchestra holds its annual concert. Also in October, Vesela Šokadija organises a children’s folklore festival dedicated to maintaining and preserving folklore traditions and children’s games.

Discovering Vrbica and Kešinci

Culinary customs and folklore take centre stage in Vrbica. At the Pužijada, various snail specialities are prepared. The traditional folklore festival Kolo na Vrbaku takes place in June and brings together cultural associations from Croatia and abroad. In Semeljci, the Rakijada is devoted to fruit brandies: they are judged, and the winners with the highest-rated brandies are then announced.

In Kešinci, the June event Antunovo includes a procession from the village centre to the chapel of St Anthony. Vrbica adds further local points of interest to the picture of the municipality: footpaths have been completed or reconstructed on Kešinačka and Mikanovačka streets.
