Karlobag’s architectural history also tells the story of different eras. The Church of St. Charles Borromeo was built in 1710 on the foundations of the Church of St. John. After being badly damaged in 1943 and its remains demolished in 1958, part of the wall and the entire bell tower were preserved. A chapel dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary of the Seven Sorrows was built on Kalvarija in 1727; in 1740, it was converted into a small church. Thirty-three steps lead to the Kubus monument. It was erected in 1846, and from there you can see Karlobag, the island of Pag, and the entire Velebit Channel.
The Capuchin monastery and the Church of St. Joseph have a rainwater cistern with a diameter of 6 metres and a capacity of about 180,000 litres. Other distinctive items include a wooden choir-stand for the Psalterium from the 18th century, called a “legil”, and a theological library with literature from the 16th, 17th, and 18th centuries. Fortica preserves the remains of a small square fortress from the 13th or 14th century, including a defensive tower. The history of the language is also connected to Karlobag: Šime Starčević’s “Ricsoslovica” was the first grammar of the Croatian language written in Croatian. Kava, meanwhile, is a privately owned Mediterranean garden with a mosaic exhibition.
Climbing, diving, and cuisine
Ravni Dabar is a climbing area for sport climbers. Sport climbing is permitted on the cliffs of Visibaba/Agin kuk, Čelina kuk, and Rujičin kuk. Diving is most pleasant between May and November, when sea temperatures are comfortable.
