Culture and History
The Capuchin monastery contains a rainwater cistern with a diameter of six metres and a capacity of approximately 180,000 litres. The monastery library preserves theological literature from the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries. The Church of Saint Joseph has a single nave and a side chapel dedicated to Saint Anthony. It also contains a valuable painting of the Last Supper by Christopher Tasco.
The Chapel of Calvary of the Blessed Virgin Mary of the Seven Sorrows was built in 1727 and converted into a small church in 1740. The Trg Giardin open-air fishing museum uses Giardin Square to present Karlobag’s fishing and maritime heritage. Visitors can use the digital content to learn more about local fishermen, fishing methods and fish specialities.
Fortica served to monitor maritime traffic towards Pag and preserves the remains of a cistern that was used for the water supply. It also preserves, on an elevated plateau about 250 metres from the coast, the remains of a smaller four-cornered fortress from the 13th or 14th century.
Hiking Between the Coast and Velebit
The Karlobag–Baške Oštarije hiking trail connects the town with Baške Oštarije and follows sections of the historic Karolina and Teresiana roads. It is 11.3 kilometres long and has an elevation difference of 1,083 metres. The trail begins in Baška Draga, about ten minutes from Karlobag town centre. A branch reaches the ruins of the Church of Saint Vitus in about ten minutes. The hiking trail offers views of Pag and the peaks of the central Velebit.
In the surrounding area, the Teresiana educational trail is intended exclusively for pedestrians. It offers views of the Adriatic, Pag and the Baške Oštarije valley. The historic Teresiana road is classified as a cultural asset.
