Watercourses, hills and an extraordinary medieval structure define Općina Ribnik. Numerous drinking-water springs rise in the Ribnik Valley, and many streams flow through the landscape. Stream valley and hills
To the west, the Ribnik area is bounded by the Kupa River and Lipničko Gorje. To the east lie the foothills of Svetičko Gorje, including the peak of Vodenica. At 538 metres, the peak offers views over Ribnik from the summit. In late spring, wild strawberries grow in the clearings above Ribnik. Depending on your interests, the landscape reveals watercourses, hills and seasonal natural features.
Water is also part of the area’s history: the Obrh stream rises at Stari grad Ribnik and supplied water to the defensive moat. The spring and pond of Rilac are in the hamlet of Ravnica. Visitors can spend the whole day there, with the option of barbecuing and relaxing under a pavilion. In winter, visitors can track wildlife in the snow around Ribnik.
Hiking trails with different themes
The established “Staza Jurja Križanića” hiking route runs from Stari grad Ribnik past the remains of Obrh Castle and Jasenovica, then back to Stari grad Ribnik. Its stops connect local history with a route through the area. SrCe Prirode also offers a 30-kilometre walking trail.
Another special feature is the Honey Route of the Ribnik Valley: it opened to the public in 2012 and is Croatia’s first educational beekeeping trail. Those interested in beekeeping can explore the region through this theme. The “SrCe Prirode” cycling route also passes through Ribnik and Lipnik. Ribnik also has a motocross track, which hosts races and freestyle motocross shows. In winter, tracking wildlife in the surrounding area offers another way to experience nature.
Water castle, churches and traditional houses
Stari grad Ribnik is a category zero cultural monument and one of the few surviving medieval lowland fortresses of the water-castle type. The importance of water can also be traced here through the history of the defensive moat. Juraj Jurko Križanić was born in 1618 at Obrh Castle near Ribnik and baptised in the parish of St Ilija below Lipnik.
Lipnik is home to the Baroque parish church of St Ilija the Prophet. Its oldest part is the sacristy, which dates from 1673; the parish of Lipnik is first mentioned in 1334. Another Baroque landmark is the Chapel of St Peter in Gornja Stranica, built in 1809. In Griče, the Chapel of St Anne is among the area’s historically and culturally valuable religious buildings. Several villages also preserve traditional wooden houses of the “hiže s gankom” type, including Jasenovica, Gornja Stranica, Donja Stranica and Novaki Lipnički.
Ribnik lies at the junction of the D6 state road and a road from the direction of Ozalj; this location is a practical reference point for the area.
