Rakovica: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

Rakovica is closely associated with speleological tourism. This includes the tourist-accessible Barać Caves and the exploration of the surrounding karst underground. Those who choose Rakovica as a place to stay may wish to rent a holiday apartment.

Nature

In the immediate vicinity of the Barać Caves is Vučja staza, a 1.2-kilometre hiking trail at the excursion site. The hiking trails near the Barać Caves can be used free of charge; guided hikes are available for a fee. Medvjeđa staza also runs there for 7.5 kilometres. It includes viewpoints, forest springs, streams and caves.

Speleon is open to visitors year-round in the immediate vicinity. Visits take place with expert guidance and last between 45 minutes and one hour. Ice Age animal fossils found in the Upper Barać Cave are also presented there.

In the immediate vicinity, Ranch Equus igni offers guided horseback rides along the edge of Plitvice Lakes National Park. The programme also includes multi-day excursions and tracking tours for experienced riders.

Culture and History

Stari grad Drežnik is a preserved historic fortification associated with the Frankopan defensive estates. Its round defensive tower is considered an example of 15th- and 16th-century military architecture and gives visitors the experience of an Early Renaissance castle.

According to local historical tradition, Saint Helena's Church in Rakovica is connected with a vow made after a battle against the Turks. After being destroyed in the war at the end of 1991, it was rebuilt and fully restored by 2001. The Feast of Saint Helena is celebrated every year on 18 August in Rakovica as a traditional local gathering. After Mass, the celebration continues in the square in Rakovica.

Cycling

The 7.94-kilometre circular cycling route 31 runs through Rakovica, Oštarski Stanovi and Rakovičko Selište, starts and ends in the centre of Rakovica, and passes through a sparsely populated landscape of forests, meadows and fields. Circular cycling route 32 is 12 kilometres long and runs between Rakovica, Grabovac Drežnički and Stara Kršlja.

Circular cycling route 33 is classified as difficult and covers 39.6 kilometres with 231 metres of elevation gain. It mainly follows minor roads and paths through quiet, sparsely populated places; only short sections run along the state road.

Cycling route 34, which is 15.6 kilometres long, connects Rakovica in the direction of Biljevina in Saborsko. It runs mostly along natural, unpolluted and cleared forest roads.
