Gradišće Bukovlje in Gornje Bukovlje is under preventive protection as a cultural heritage site. Gradišće-Bukovlje is a multilayered archaeological site with a prehistoric hillfort dating from the transition period between the Late Bronze Age and the Iron Age.

The archaeological area contains a single-nave Christian church from the fifth century. The late antique fortress of Gradišće-Bukovlje was fortified with defensive walls approximately two metres thick and at least two towers.

Gornje Bukovlje is also home to the early Christian Church of Saint George, located within a prehistoric hillfort. Crkvišće is considered one of the most important systematically researched late antique archaeological sites in north-western Croatia.

Landscape and water

Gornje Bukovlje is situated on the hills along the right bank of the Mrežnica. The water depth at the Gornje Bukovlje site on the Mrežnica is estimated at three metres or more. The bathing area of Gornje Bukovlje is located directly above the bridge on the left bank of the Mrežnica.

The Mrežnica, under the name Mrežnica-Tounjčica, is part of the Natura 2000 network. Within the area of the municipality of Generalski Stol, the river has 22 waterfalls.

In the wider regional area, the protected Mrežnica Significant Landscape includes the lower course of the Mrežnica in the municipality of Generalski Stol.

Cycling route

The recommended direction of the Srce prirode cycling route includes Gornje Bukovlje. Near Gornje Bukovlje, the cycling route crosses the Mrežnica via a pontoon road bridge towards Zvečaj.
