Water, activity and relaxation
In the Municipality of Generalski Stol, the Mrežnica is suitable for rafting, canoeing, swimming and fishing. These activities complement the varied river landscape, with its waterfalls, mills and bathing spots.
Four Nordic walking routes are marked out around Toplice Lešće: Staza ciklama, Staza šišmiša, Panorama Lešća and Put mlina. Their names identify four different routes to consider when planning an active day. Cycling on one of the designated cycle routes is another visitor activity in the municipality. If you would like to alternate exercise with a more relaxing break, Toplice Lešće offers wellness facilities with indoor and outdoor pools using spring thermal water, as well as whirlpools and hydromassage columns.
Churches, archaeology and crafts
The Chapel of St George in Mateško Selo dates back to the 13th century and is listed in the Register of Cultural Monuments under code Z-3174. In Lešće na Dobri, a Baroque church dedicated to St George houses a small ecclesiastical museum. The two sites offer different ways to explore religious history: one through a medieval chapel, the other through a Baroque church with a museum.
Gradišće-Bukovlje also reaches far back into the past. This multi-layered archaeological site includes a prehistoric hillfort dating from the transition between the Late Bronze Age and the Iron Age. The site also contains a late antique fortress, dated to the 4th century based on finds. The preserved old forge in Lipov Pesak, which is still in operation, reveals a different kind of local history. There is also an old stone table in the centre of Generalski Stol, where visitors can still stand today.
Getting around and choosing a base
The historic Jozefina Road runs through the Municipality of Generalski Stol, roughly parallel to the railway and the Mrežnica. The Zagreb–Rijeka railway line also passes through the municipality and contributes to its transport connections. When choosing a base, consider whether the historic road corridor or the railway line is more important for your travel plans.
