Beaches and trails with their own character

Likva is the only sandy beach among Sutivan’s beaches. If you are specifically looking for a sandy beach when planning your holiday, this is a clearly identifiable place to visit. Tatinja, meanwhile, is Sutivan’s dog beach.

Cycling also offers a range of destinations to explore. The Maestral Trail begins in Sutivan and leads to Likva Sand Bay after a short ride. The Tramuntana Trail starts in the centre and runs south towards St. Roko Hill. Levanat is also one of Sutivan’s themed cycling trails; no specific route is associated with it. A rest stop for cyclists is located between Sutivan and Mirca, along the existing coastal walking trail. The Lungomare stretches along the east side from Mirca to Vičja luka Bay in the west.

Those looking to combine nature and activity on holiday can also make a note of Golo brdo. It is the highest point in the Municipality of Sutivan; from there, the view extends across the land and, in clear conditions, as far as Hvar, Vis, Sveti Andrija, Brusnik and Jabuka. Vela Lokva lies in the southwestern part of the municipality and is protected as part of the Natura 2000 network. There is a picnic area with tables and benches, as well as opportunities to relax, meditate and observe wildlife at the ponds.

History revealed through specific places

Sutivan’s historic centre is protected as a cultural monument under Croatian law. One notable street there is Put crikve: it is considered Sutivan’s only surviving authentic Kongul street and is paved with rounded pebbles. The Kavanjin mansion also tells the story of the settlement’s architectural history; it was built between 1690 and 1705. The Latin inscription OSTIVM NON HOSTIVM is located on the southern doorpost of the Kavanjin summer house.

The votive Church of St. Roch stands on St. Roko Hill near Sutivan and was built in 1635. Underground tombs known as catacombs are located near the church and are rare on Brač. Those interested in historical techniques and everyday life will find other distinctive heritage sites: Japjenka, a rare, partially preserved monument to traditional dry-stone construction, stands on Timunić Beach. It was used to produce lime for building stone houses. Lokvice is Sutivan’s largest gustirda, a water-collection structure. Until Brač was supplied with water from the Cetina River, it was an important source of drinking water for the town.

The tower of the former windmill belonging to the Ilić family dates from the early 19th century and is considered the best-preserved of the 125 wheat mills that were operating on Brač around 1800. The former mill in Sutivan can be visited only by prior arrangement with the owner. Small artefacts from an ancient shipwreck, including a bone gaming die, are displayed in Sutivan’s public library. There is also an interactive kiosk on the waterfront with content about the underwater shipwreck interpretation project.

Festivals, nature and local cuisine

Sutivan’s major religious celebrations include the parish feast on 15 August and the Fiera of St. Roch on 16 August. The Municipality Day takes place on 24 June and is traditionally marked with folk and church celebrations. Sutivan is also known for the summer extreme sports festival Vanka Regule. During the Sutivan Summer Festival, the courtyard of the Kavanjin summer house is used as a performance venue. On 4 August 2026, a monument to the emigrants of Brač and Dr. Antonio Rendić Ivanović was erected in Sutivan’s central public park.

Artičoke s bobom, regarded as one of Sutivan’s most significant dishes, is also part of the local character. Nature enthusiasts may also be interested in the Natura 2000 marine area from Sutivan to Stipanska Lagoon: it belongs to an ecological network that is important for protecting endangered species and habitats. Day trips by boat or sailing excursions to the central Adriatic islands of Hvar, Šolta and Vis are available from Sutivan.
