Stone Carving and History

The Klesarska škola was founded in 1909 and preserves the traditional Roman technique of manual stoneworking. Another trace of the area’s craft history leads to Veselje Bay: there, a lease agreement signed on 2 May 1455 for the opening of a quarry marks the beginning of organised stoneworking in Pučišća. Ciprijan Žuvetić Tower, the oldest fully preserved tower in Pučišća, was built in 1467.

Palača Moro, Crkva sv. Jurja and Župni dvor are also among the sights of Pučišća. The combination of craftsmanship, buildings and dated historical traces gives your visit a tangible cultural focus without requiring you to settle on a single theme.

Cycling and Hiking

The Pučišća Family Route is a very easy, 9.3-kilometre out-and-back route for recreational and educational cycling. It starts and ends in Pučišća. The route has a total ascent of 96 metres and a maximum gradient of 6.4 per cent; the average riding time is 45 minutes to one hour. The surface combines smooth asphalt with compacted gravel, and the difficulty level is 2 out of 5. The route is suitable for trekking, city, e-bikes and children’s bikes; GPS navigation is recommended.

On foot, you can follow the Via Brattia circular hiking trail from Pučišća; it is marked in both directions. Two longer routes are also described for MTB and eMTB: Srce Brača is 33.7 kilometres long, and the Pučišća–Selca–Pučišća circular route is 46.7 kilometres. This makes it easy to distinguish the routes by length and intended bike type, while Via Brattia offers a hiking option.

Pražnica and Its Cultural Heritage

Pražnica is an old medieval settlement in the interior of the island of Brač and preserves an archaic form of the Brač Chakavian dialect. It is home to religious buildings from different centuries: the Chapel of St Ciprijan in the Čimatorije cemetery dates from the 13th century and contains a Renaissance stone relief from 1467. The All Saints’ Chapel in the village square was built in 1638 and features Romanesque-Gothic elements.

The two chapels offer a tangible comparison of architectural and art history: the medieval date and stone relief are notable features of one, while the construction date and blend of styles distinguish the other. Together with the preserved dialect form, they show that Pražnica’s story goes beyond the history of its settlement.

Local Cuisine and Excursion Ideas

Pučišća’s native sweet treats include roasted and candied almonds, Torta rožata and Arancini made from citrus peels. Field snails are also eaten in Pučišća, and recipes passed down through Brač families are particularly recommended. Brač cheese, bread baked under a baking bell and spit-roasted lamb are Brač delicacies associated with rural tourism in Pražnica.

Possible activities from Pučišća include boat trips to explore the beaches and bays of Brač, as well as day trips to the neighbouring islands of Hvar and Šolta. Excursion plans can therefore complement cycling and cultural activities with a perspective from the water.
