Selca: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

Culture

Almost all houses in Selca are made entirely of stone. The village’s cultural heritage includes the pre-Romanesque “Church of St Nicholas” from the 11th to 12th century; it is considered one of the most significant medieval monuments on Brač.

The “Church of St Thomas” stands on a hill above the hamlet of Nadsela on the road from Gornji Humac to Selca. Trg Stjepana Radića, known locally as Pijaca, is a cultural and historical monument to the art of stonemasonry.

Palac, also known as the “Štambuk Family Palace”, was built in 1869 by three merchant brothers. In its stone construction, the stones are joined without visible joints. The old “Church of Our Lady of Carmel” dates from the 18th century.

Didolića dvori is a 19th-century house built by the influential Didolić family; the Slovak writer Martin Kukučin lived there. Tolstoy Park was built in 1910.

The Wall of Poets features stone plaques dedicated to poets who were crowned at the annual poetry evening Ča, kaj, što. Croatia Rediviva is an annual poetry event held in Selca every August. The Statue of Our Lady of Carmel is carried in a procession every year on 16 July.

Trails and Routes

The cycling network of the Municipality of Selca connects Selca, Sumartin, Povlja and Novo Selo through olive groves, viewpoints and historic landscapes.

Maps of the hiking and cycling routes are displayed on a public notice board next to the church in Selca. Along the Selca–Sumartin trekking route, there are water, refreshments and shops in Selca.
