Cherven: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

The medieval city of Cherven is a fortress dating from the Second Bulgarian Empire and is designated as the “Medieval City of Cherven” Archaeological Reserve.

Culture

The site preserves the remains of an inner fortified city and an outer settlement. These include a boyar castle, a metropolitan church, water cisterns, houses along the streets, eleven churches, and a twelve-metre-high, multi-storey watchtower. A tunnel staircase leads south of the fortress to an underground karst spring.

Cherven succeeded a Byzantine fortress from the sixth century and reached its greatest extent between the 12th and 14th centuries. After 1235, the city became the seat of the Bulgarian Metropolitanate of Cherven. It also developed into an important centre of craftsmanship, with ironworking, goldsmithing, construction trades, and artistic crafts.

Landscape

The medieval settlement consisted of an inner citadel on a high rocky plateau and an outer city at its foot. Cherven is strategically situated in the valley of the Cherni Lom River. The fortress stands above a bend in the Cherni Lom and offers an impressive panoramic view.

The medieval city of Cherven is located in Rusenski Lom Nature Park. The Red Route follows the gorges of the Rusenski Lom and Cherni Lom rivers. Along its course, it passes occurrences of protected plant species and nests of protected bird species.

Paths and Getting There

The marked Red Route is approximately 20 kilometres long and runs between the archaeological reserves of the Rock-Hewn Churches of Ivanovo and the medieval city of Cherven. One listed route provides a direct path to the medieval city of Cherven. An authentic water supply system serving Cherven Fortress can be visited.
