The Monument of the Holy Mother of God in Haskovo is the world’s tallest statue of the Virgin Mary with Child. The monument is 32.8 metres high; the chapel “Nativity of the Mother of God” is located at its base. From Yamacha Hill at the monument, the panorama extends across the entire city. The monument can be visited free of charge all year round and is accessible to visitors with disabilities.
The Shishmanova House was built in 1854 in a 19th-century architectural style characteristic of the wider Thracian region. The Shishmanova House museum displays domestic activities from the 19th and early 20th centuries and reopened after restoration in 2024. The Regional History Museum in Haskovo presents prehistoric, ancient and medieval collections, more than 22,000 ancient and medieval coins, and an ethnographic collection with nearly 15,000 objects. It can be visited with a guided tour all year round and is located in the central urban area.
Near Haskovo is the Museum of Thracian Art in the Eastern Rhodopes. It is open all year round except Mondays, offers guided visits and is accessible to visitors with disabilities. Kirko School is an elaborately decorated urban residence from the late 19th century in the centre of Haskovo, which was later converted into a museum building. Its “Haskovo Revivalists” exhibition was expanded and renovated in 2024.
The Ivan Dimov Theatre was built in 1926 and extensively restored by the Municipality of Haskovo in 2004. Haskovo’s Old Clock Tower was built at the beginning of the 19th century as a symbol of the city and its economic development. The restored Old Clock Tower is 23 metres high and built from hewn Uzundzhovo stone.
Nature
Within Haskovo Municipality, the protected natural landmark of Boaza near Garvanovo includes a waterfall on the Banska River. Also within Haskovo Municipality, the Zlato Pole protected area near Nova Nadezhda preserves a wetland on the Maritsa River that supports threatened and protected plant and animal species.
Park and Zoo
Kenana Zoo is located in Kenana Park and is described as one of Bulgaria’s oldest zoos. It offers families and children the opportunity to see animals in a park setting. Kenana Park also has a rest area with picnic benches, solar lights, barbecue facilities, a basketball hoop, car parks and waste bins.
