Landscape and Culture

Kule Fortress stands on Kule Peak, 0.51 km northwest of the center of Zornitsa. From there, the views extend northeast across the plain and toward Haskovo, as well as northwest into the valley of the Harmanliyska River and toward the Trakiets Reservoir, which is designated for recreational fishing near Zornitsa. There is also a direct line of sight from Kule Peak to the Great Hasar and Little Hasarche fortresses to the northeast.

History

Zornitsa is associated with the Aydogmush/Zornitsa Post during the Balkan War campaign. The attack on the Aydogmush/Zornitsa Post began at 3:00 p.m. on October 5, and the post building was destroyed. The nighttime attack on the Aydogmush/Zornitsa Post approached along a steep slope from the east, northeast, and west. In the same battle, Bulgarian troops reached the heights near the Aydogmush/Zornitsa Post in a night attack at around 7:30 p.m.

Nature and Geographical Setting

Road III-5009 runs between Zornitsa and Beli Plast. Between Beli Plast and Zornitsa, on the Haskovo–Kardzhali road, lies the Stone Mushrooms natural landmark, locally known as Mantar Kaya. Its rhyolitic volcanic tuff formations are approximately 38 million years old; the site was declared a natural landmark in 1974. The formations have trunks and caps up to 2.5 meters high. Softer lower layers and harder upper layers shaped the Stone Mushrooms through erosion occurring at different rates.
