In the village of Gorski Izvor, the Church of St. George the Victorious has been a cultural monument of national significance since 1964. Its murals are of great artistic value. In Yabalkovo, the first Church of St. Dimitar was built in 1842 during Ottoman rule. The Church of St. Dimitar is a massive brick building with a gabled roof and open galleries on its western and southern sides. These architectural features give a visit to the church a distinct architectural focus.
More recent history and art also shape the cultural sites. At the Dimitrovgrad Historical Museum, the “Brigade Movement in Bulgaria” hall is considered unique of its kind in Bulgaria. In the south of the city, the Penyo Penev Memorial Park is dedicated to the Brigade Movement and the poet Penyo Penev, who is important to socialist poetry. In Krepost, murals by the artist brothers Hristo and Pancho Panev adorn all the village’s public buildings. This is why Krepost is known as an “open-air gallery.”

The Petko Churchuliev Municipal Art Gallery holds 10 to 12 exhibitions each year and is a popular destination for fans of visual art. In Bryast, the custom of shooting arrows with so-called “Chavgi” takes place every year on Sirni Zagovezni. The Thracian Harvest Festival begins with a ritual harvest ceremony marking the start of the harvest in the municipality of Dimitrovgrad. Birdlife and Archaeological Traces
The “Pygmy Cormorant Roost” protected area safeguards part of the Maritsa River valley and remnants of riparian forests. It serves as a stopover and gathering place for the pygmy cormorant (Phalacrocorax pygmaeus) during migration. The Zlato Pole protected area has two birdwatching towers and three rest shelters. These facilities offer a practical point of reference for getting oriented on site; check their condition before your visit.
The Sanctuary of the Nymphs and Aphrodite lies about 500 meters northeast of the village of Kasnakovo, in the Gyaur Bunar area. It was built between the 2nd and 4th centuries. An asphalt road leads to the sanctuary; on site, there is a tourist information center, a parking lot and rest areas. If you plan to visit, check the conditions on site in advance.
