Gostun: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

Gostun is a mountain settlement four to five kilometres from Mesta, located near the main road to Gotse Delchev. The village has cobbled streets laid on a stabilised earth foundation. Above Gostun, the cross offers panoramic views towards the Pirin Mountains as well as the villages and towns of Bansko Municipality.

History

Until 1934, Gostun was known as Gustun. In 1889, Stefan Verković recorded Gostun as having 100 Bulgarian houses. In the statistics on the male population from 1873, the settlement is listed as having 110 households and 380 Bulgarians. In addition, nine archaeological finds in Gostun have been attributed to Bansko Municipality.

Culture

The Church of Saint Mary above Gostun is described as dating from 1776; indications point to an older Byzantine-era origin. The Chapel of Saint George is described as the oldest sanctuary in the area around Gostun. The local legend of Svatbata tells of wedding guests who were travelling from Osenovo to Gostun to collect a bride.

Trails and Surroundings

In the immediate surroundings, Kara Kaya is described as a megalithic Thracian shrine built around two centres: one on the rocky summit and one at the springs of the Visteritsa River. A tourist trail to the Kara Kaya shrine begins in Gostun. Also in the immediate surroundings, Kara Kaya occupies a dominant peak in the Western Rhodopes, ending in a natural stone pyramid; rock cuts are located near the Visteritsa River. Visitors can walk along Gostun's cobbled streets and view preserved authentic architecture.
