Culture and History

Between Zabrđe and Toplice in the municipality of Kiseljak, a medieval necropolis is designated as a protected historic area. In the Podastinje heritage area, the ensemble includes a prehistoric hillfort, a Late Antique fortification or refuge structure, the remains of a Late Antique church dedicated to Saint Lucia, and a necropolis with stećci. Podastinje is also the source of a coin hoard containing 160 silver coins from the time of Septimius Severus to Valerian I; it is dated to approximately AD 253–260.

Podastinje also preserves traces of ancient cultures from prehistory through the Middle Ages. The area is characterized by a karst hill known as Crkvina. The historic area of Stari grad Kaštele in Kiseljak is designated a national monument. A stećak inscription in Zabrđe names a prince, Radoje, as Grand Prince of Bosnia.

The town’s living culture includes the Izvor 08 cultural and artistic society. It has existed since 2008, has more than 100 members, and maintains the folklore tradition through performances such as “The Song about Kiseljak” and dances from Central Bosnia.

Mineral Water and Nature

Kiseljak’s numerous mineral water springs shaped the town’s development into a tourism and spa center. During a stay in Kiseljak in 1806–1807, it was reported that mineral water was exported to Dubrovnik. Historically, warm and cold mineral water were drunk in Kiseljak, while mineral water baths, mud baths, and partial massages were used for treatment.

The Lepenica flows through Kiseljak. Within the settlement, it receives the tributaries Kreševčica and Rotiljski potok; at the northeastern edge of the town, it flows into the Fojnička rijeka. The network of waterways and its named tributaries therefore also form part of the town’s distinctive character.
