Culture

The 27-metre-high Sahat kula is an official symbol of Gračanica. The clock tower is also considered a cultural and historical building around 300 years old and a national monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Several periods of history come together at the Osman-Kapetanova medresa: it was founded in 1800, while the present building was constructed in 1889 in the pseudo-Moorish style. Its courtyard is the most important venue for the traditional cultural and entertainment event “Ljetnje večeri pod lipama Gračanice”. The combination of the historic building and the cultural event makes the courtyard a place where architecture and culture meet.

The historic cityscape also includes Kuća Mare Popović. It is the only remaining old Čardaklija in Gračanica, was built in the second half of the 19th century and has the status of a national monument. Ahmed-pašina džamija acquired its present stone, domed form between 1914 and 1916. A permanent exhibition is provided by the local museum collection and gallery Zavičajno-muzejska zbirka i galerija in Gračanica. For museums and exhibitions, current opening hours are part of practical day planning and should be checked before visiting.

History

The ruins of the medieval fortified town of Soko lie around 6 kilometres north of Gračanica. They are regarded as the historical origin of the city. The Gračanički Ćiro also points to an important historical connection: it represents the Gračanica–Karanovac narrow-gauge railway, which began operating in 1898 and transported passengers, mail and goods.

Landscape

Gračanica lies in the valley of the Spreča River. Around 6 kilometres to the north, near Gračanica, is the summit of Vis, which at 692 metres is the highest peak of the Trebava mountain range and lies directly above the village of Babići. Vis is also a well-equipped recreational area. During a large part of the year, various cultural, sporting and other occasional events take place there.

The Bijele vode Soko recreational area lies 2 kilometres northeast of the medieval town of Soko near Gračanica, at an altitude of 600 metres. Its name refers to a drinking-water spring whose water is considered inexhaustible. The Izletište Ratiš recreational area has a Dovište. Believers gather there every Monday today for prayer and a religious address; the Dovište is also associated with a 700-year tradition of prayer. For events and recreational areas, it is advisable to check current dates and, where applicable, trail conditions before setting out.

Leisure

Terme Gračanica offers various facilities for children and adults. These include a children's playground, volleyball courts, a restaurant and a massage room. Another cultural speciality is Gračaničko keranje, which includes numerous handmade textile and decorative items such as tablecloths, handkerchiefs, earrings, rings, brooches, clothing ornaments, doilies and headscarves. Gračaničko keranje is regarded as part of the cultural heritage as well as a cultural, tourism and ethnographic brand of Gračanica.
