Zoutenaaie: Church History in a Vast Polder Landscape

Zoutenaaie combines a rich church history with the vast landscape of the Oudland Polders. According to Veurne historian Pauwel Heindrycx, Zoutenaaie became an independent parish around 1204 under the patronage of the Sint-Bertijns Abbey of Sint-Omaars. Today, the history of the religious building can be traced through the memorial wall: a memorial wall made of yellow bricks marks the former site of the Onze-Lieve-Vrouwekerk van Zoutenaaie and has three round-arched openings.

The commemorative plaque on the memorial wall records the church’s foundation in 1209, its reconstruction in 1608, its demolition in 1824 and its excavation in 1960. This sequence of dates makes the eventful history of the religious building comprehensible. Three brick-built burial chambers were discovered in the former church building of the Onze-Lieve-Vrouw-kerk van Zoutenaaie. The former cemetery stood on a trapezoidal raised mound that extended about 80 centimetres above the surrounding meadows and was surrounded by a ditch. Three red Jerusalem crosses had been painted on the long walls of the third vaulted burial chamber.

Oudland Polder and Vast Vistas

The landscape around Zoutenaaie also shapes the experience of staying here. The Oudland Polders near Zoutenaaie, Lampernisse and Alveringem are protected landscapes. The polder area of Lampernisse and its surroundings, which also includes Zoutenaaie, comprises polders that have been used since the Middle Ages, with undulating grasslands. It follows the eleventh-century Oude Zeedijk from Oostduinkerke via Wulpen, Avekapelle and Zoutenaaie to the IJzer, forming the only road through the vast landscape. The route also follows the Oude-Aa-vaartpad, which is intended for cyclists and pedestrians.

Another option is the Michel-Pollentier cycling route. The two variants of the Michel-Pollentier cycling route are signposted with red signs displaying the route name and the number of kilometres. Since 2020, there has also been a shorter, signposted variant measuring 33 km.
