The cellars, part of the residential building and both towers date from the late 13th century. During the First World War, Kasteelhoeve Torreelen was used as a military hospital. The complex is regarded as a large, imposing medieval castle; its good state of preservation and recognisable character are particularly striking.

Smaller historical details also add to the overall picture. The Pastorie 't Scheurvliet is a former presbytery, partly surrounded by a moat, with a masonry access bridge and a gate dated 1853. The former municipal school of Vinkem is dated 1871 by cartouches on the pillars of the upper floor. Hoeve 't Kapelhof preserves an old core probably dating from the 17th century, recognisable by a surviving door surround on the farmyard façade. The farmstead is partly surrounded by a moat and consists of low, loosely arranged buildings with tiled gable roofs.

The war memorial in the cemetery commemorates the village’s military dead from the First World War, as well as one military casualty from the Second World War. It also names Remi Sampers, a soldier born in Vinkem who fell in Bavikhove on 16 October 1918. Such specific names and dates give a walk through Vinkem a personal historical dimension.
