Sosoye: Limestone, Nature and Village History

Sosoye combines a distinctive limestone landscape with a village centre steeped in history. Above the buildings rise the steep limestone slopes of Montagne de Ranzinelle. At the same time, the elongated village centre and historic buildings shape the character of the village.

Experience nature and choose your routes carefully

A characteristic natural destination is the La Montagne de Sosoye nature reserve. Public access is restricted to properly signposted paths and areas. For your planning, this means: during your visit, stay on the designated paths and take the applicable access areas into account.

The “Pelouses calcaires” circular route leads up Montagne de Ranzinelle and onwards to a viewpoint. This provides a specific opportunity to see the limestone slopes not only from below. The landscape impression is shaped by the location above the buildings of Sosoye. If you prefer to explore the village character itself, you can choose a 2.7-kilometre walk. This allows you to discover Sosoye as a Condroz village built of limestone, extending mainly along its main street.

Church, barn and village history

The cultural centrepiece consists of the Notre-Dame de la Nativité church and the neighbouring Grange aux Dîmes. The church is a protected monument and was built from limestone rubble in 1764–1765. Inside, the high altar dates from 1754 and comes from Tongeren. The church and its high altar thus combine architectural history with a specific furnishing detail.

The Grange aux Dîmes next to the church is a double limestone barn from the 17th century and is designated as a protected ensemble. It was built in 1646 by monks from Brogne Abbey, which was based in the village of Saint-Gérard (Mettet). Anyone interested in regional architectural styles and historic village structures will find several different points of interest here in one place.

A discovery walk through Sosoye is equipped with educational information panels and begins in Rue Thirion. In addition, the artwork “L'eau de vie de Sosoye” by Norska is located at the old railway bridge in the village centre. These stops provide the walk with further specific destinations, so you do not have to limit yourself to a purely nature-oriented route.

Rail bikes and games for shared days

The former railway line 150 between Tamines and Dinant runs through Sosoye and is now used by rail bikes. Its former function as a railway line remains part of the village’s history, while its current use opens up a different leisure perspective.

Families can play the “Geoquizz” game in Sosoye. Another family game, “Les aventures légendaires”, is available on the RAVeL of the Molignée in Sosoye and along the route from Moulins to Montaigle. Such activities can provide a change of pace when planning your day alongside churches, landscapes and longer walks.
