Bihain: Hiking Trails, Fagne and History
Accommodation in Bihain
A nature trail in a protected nature reserve, marked hiking trails and traces of local and wartime history give Bihain a varied character. If you include nature and history in your holiday plans, you’ll find specific themes here to shape your trip around.
Fagne and Hiking Trails
The Fagne du Plateau des Tailles is a nature reserve with distinctive vegetation. Its peat bogs regulate the flow of water into the rivers. This gives the landscape not only a distinctive character but also an important role in water management. For nature enthusiasts, these offer two different perspectives: the distinctive vegetation and the role of the bogs.
The Circuit du Sacrawé is a 6 km nature trail in the Réserve Naturelle de la grande Fange de Bihain. It is marked with a blue cross and partly runs over wooden boardwalks through the Fagne. The nature trail, waymarking and boardwalk sections make it a clearly defined hiking option, with the landscape itself forming part of the route’s theme.
Another option is marked hiking trail No. 10. It starts at the car park of the Auberge du Carrefour in the village of Bihain, runs along the Fagne des Plateau des Tailles and is 12 km long. The routes can therefore be compared using a clear measure: the Circuit du Sacrawé is 6 km long, while trail No. 10 is twice as long. If you choose hiking routes by distance, you can take both figures directly into account when planning.
Local History and Remembrance
The 83rd Infantry Division Museum focuses exclusively on the American 83rd Infantry Division. It took part in the Battle of the Bulge and liberated Bihain during the Second World War. The museum includes a railway carriage that was used at the time to deport Jewish prisoners to concentration camps. The site also features a memorial garden and a fortin, which became an exceptional memorial to the 4,430 American soldiers killed in the Second World War. Together, these features offer a powerful connection to the history of the war and remembrance of its victims.
Bihain is also connected to earlier local history: in the late 19th century, the village was known for its mines, where iron ore and manganese were extracted. The Saint-Remi Church has stood in the village for eight centuries; TV Lux reported on it in April 2026. The history of mining and the church add further layers of local history to the remembrance of the Second World War.
Village Festival and Travel Planning
Bihain’s village festival takes place every year at the end of July. If you’d like to plan your trip around this event, check the dates for your chosen year.
When looking for a holiday rental in Bihain, you could first consider which themes you’d like to shape your stay: the protected landscape and hiking trails, or local history and remembrance. This lets you choose your destination based on specific interests, rather than on a general idea of a nature or cultural holiday.
