Grand-Halleux: Trails, Remembrance and Old Stories
Accommodation in Grand-Halleux
Grand-Halleux can be discovered through marked trails, places of remembrance and stories that reach far back into the past. Promenade No. 7 offers a concrete starting point for planning a hike; in Farnières, an old chapel and a Marian legend take centre stage. There is also a remembrance trail and information about historic routes. If you are looking for a holiday rental, you can first consider whether hiking, Ardennes history or old pilgrimage routes will shape your stay.
Marked trails with different points of interest
The marked Promenade No. 7 is described with slightly differing details: one source gives a distance of 11 km, a green square trail marker and the church of Grand-Halleux as the starting point. Another gives a distance of 11.5 km, a moderate difficulty level and an estimated duration of around 2 hours 30 minutes; the starting point listed there is Rue Capitaine Lekeux, 6698 Grand-Halleux. The differences are relevant when planning your day: the difficulty and approximate duration relate to the 11.5 km description, while the 11 km description specifies the green square marker and the start at the church.
The marked mountain bike circuit No. 2 offers a different scale: it is 21 km long and starts at the Syndicat d’initiative de Vielsalm. Its starting point is therefore in Vielsalm. Compared with the 11 or 11.5 km Promenade, it is the longer route. When choosing a holiday rental, you can consider your preferred activities together with their stated starting points.
Another option on foot is the Grand-Halleux remembrance trail. The eight-kilometre route passes through the village and its surroundings; six information panels recount the counteroffensive as experienced by local residents. It was inaugurated in June 2025. With its shorter distance and historical focus, it offers a different setting from Promenade No. 7.
Places of remembrance and landscape history
A plaque by the perimeter wall of Église Saint-Laurent commemorates the heroism of American GIs and Belgian citizens during the Battle of the Bulge. It provides a specific memorial site in Grand-Halleux. At Rocher du Hourt, excavations in the 19th century reportedly uncovered graves and coins, suggesting that the Grand-Halleux region had been inhabited since the 1st century AD. These finds support a cautiously worded historical interpretation.
The name Les Halleux also offers a clue to the landscape: it refers to a widening of the valley at Grand-Halleux and Petit-Halleux. This connects the place name to a specific feature of the valley without merging the different trails and historic sites into a single excursion.
Farnières: chapel, legend and old routes
Farnières is home to a small, very old chapel. According to legend, in the 14th century a beggar found an image of the Virgin Mary at the foot of a tree. After it was taken to the castle chapel, it returned to the place where it had been found. Alongside its chapel, the story gives the place its own religious tradition.
Farnières also lies at the crossroads of two very old routes: one led from Vielsalm to Saint Jacques, while the other ran from Lierneux through Grand-Halleux and on to “la Prusse” in Germany. Saint Jacques was a stop on the pilgrimage route to Compostela. These historic connections add another perspective on Farnières alongside the legend: the place is associated both with the story of the image of the Virgin Mary and with old routes through the region.
The starting points for the Promenade and the remembrance trail are in Grand-Halleux; the mountain bike circuit starts in Vielsalm. Take these details into account when planning your day and choosing where to stay.
