Landscape and traces of history

Wijer was a Loonse lordship for centuries. This historical context complements the impressions you can gain while walking through the village. One of Wijer’s oldest stone houses stands on the Schans van Wijer. Wall anchors there indicate the year 1782. The enlarged Sint-Pietersbandenkerk was put into use on 20 May 1958. The Lambrechts Monument at the church also commemorates a family of resistance fighters during the Second World War.

Kasteel van Wijer is also part of the village’s history. It stands within the territory of Wijer. Of the moated castle, only the donjon with its stair tower, dating from the 16th century, remains. The park has a large pond with a tree-covered island. This pond was created from the old castle moat, which was landscaped and extended to the north and south. Kasteel van Wijer lies in a spacious, semi-open landscape of fields, meadows and woodland, bounded by the Wijerbeek.
