Peer: Bruegel, nature trails and Snow Valley
Peer combines short discoveries on foot, diverse cycling routes, Bruegel culture and a year-round indoor snow experience. Those looking for a combination of nature, activity and cultural impressions for their holiday can plan varied days here: from the 3.9 km circular trail through the Dommel Valley to the indoor ski slope at Snow Valley.
On foot through Peer and the Dommel Valley
The signposted themed walk “Dommelkronkel” is a 3.9 km circular trail with information boards about the Dommel Valley. It therefore offers a manageable tour that combines the landscape with information about the valley. In addition, a historical town walk through Peer runs for approximately 2 km past notable buildings, monuments and works of art. These two routes have different focuses: one is dedicated to the Dommel Valley, while the other focuses on the townscape and its visible landmarks.
The route to Erperheide can also be included in your planning for orientation. It starts at the market square in Peer, where there is a starting sign. The return journey to Erperheide is signposted with the same Orry signs. The Erperheide–Peer cycle route is 6 km long, has little traffic and is family-friendly. It leads across fields, past the ski slope and then into the lively centre of Peer.
Bruegel as a guiding theme for culture and landscape
The Bruegel Museum displays more than 40 paintings by Pieter Bruegel the Elder as life-size reproductions. Those who want to experience art not only in an exhibition room but also in the landscape can choose the Bruegelfietsroute. It leads through the forests of Peer, past various farms and listed farm estates, picturesque views, rural scenes and the Breugelhoeve. Along the way, visitors can also admire eight reproductions of works by Bruegel.
Another cultural stop is the free exhibition “Bruegel. De grote ontsnapping” in the Sint-Trudo Church in Peer. Ten creatures from Bruegel’s paintings can be seen there. This gives visitors various ways to engage with the artist in Peer: in the museum, on a cycling tour through woodland and cultural landscapes, or as part of the exhibition in the church.
Cycling routes, nature and experiences for families
Peer has two signposted mountain bike routes. The green mountain bike loop starts at De Deuster and is 25.08 km long. The blue mountain bike loop starts at Breugelhoeve and covers 25.87 km. Those looking for a longer, sporty route can take these two specific options into account when planning their day without losing sight of the cultural and natural aspects of the trip.
The Abeek Valley is considered an intact biotope. The stream has never been straightened, and the water balance has been preserved in an almost original state. In total, the Abeek Valley offers 11 hiking trails covering 88 km of nature. For another family outing, the Breugelhoeve’s petting farm offers goats, sheep, rabbits, guinea pigs and small ponies to discover. The Breugelhoeve’s play and activity garden is freely accessible.
Snow Valley adds an activity that is possible all year round. Visitors can snowboard or ski and train there on real snow. The indoor ski slope is considered the longest and steepest in the Benelux. This means that Peer can also be planned as an appealing destination when a snow experience is on the agenda alongside walks, cycling tours and culture.
The right accommodation for your travel plans
When looking for a holiday apartment or holiday home in Peer, you can first consider which of these experiences should be the main focus. For a holiday with short distances on foot and cultural attractions, a plan centred around the historical town walk, the Bruegel Museum and the exhibition is a good fit. Those who prefer to explore different routes by bicycle can focus on the 6 km route to Erperheide, the Bruegelfietsroute or one of the two mountain bike loops. The Abeek Valley, Breugelhoeve and Snow Valley in turn offer their own ideas for day trips.
