Discover Maasmechelen: Nature, Mining History and Hiking Trails

Maasmechelen combines the landscape of Hoge Kempen National Park with traces of its mining history and special destinations along the Meuse. The area offers a variety of focal points, so a trip does not have to be limited to just one type of experience.

Nature Trails Between Spoil Heaps, Heathland and the Meuse

Maasmechelen includes part of Hoge Kempen National Park, Belgium’s first national park. Terhills is the main gateway to the national park and is home to the National Park Visitor Center. Three of the four spoil heaps in Terhills are accessible; their summits offer views over the Maasvallei and the national park. A 380-metre-long bridge leads between the mining spoil heaps over the water and is used by cyclists and pedestrians.

There are also specific options for different day lengths. The Zandloperpad trail on the Mechelse Heide is 1.5 kilometres long, surfaced and leads through a former sandstone quarry. The trail is also suitable for wheelchair users and families with pushchairs; it includes a birdwatching wall, a footbridge and several physical challenges. The Kruinenpad, by contrast, is a 181-metre-long aerial bridge between the treetops in a mining subsidence area.

Those who prefer longer routes can choose between five signposted loops in the Leut hiking area. The green loop is 3 kilometres long and leads through the historic Meuse village of Leut, past the monumental castle and through the landscape park with its special tree collection. The orange loop is 10.2 kilometres long and runs through the village centre and the castle park of Vilain XIIII to the Meuse, and onwards into the Maesbempder Greend and Mazenhoven nature areas. Maesbempdergreend–Mazenhoven contains a large lake created by gravel extraction. The Maaswinkel nature area developed from clay pits belonging to a former brickworks; these pits now provide a habitat for various amphibian species.

Mining History to See and Experience

The history of Eisden can be explored in several ways. The Kompeltoer in Terhills combines a nature walk with the history of mining in Eisden and a tasting of Kompel beers. It takes place year-round at the National Park Visitor Center, lasts 3 hours and includes a 1.5-hour walk with explanations of the mining history, as well as a 1.5-hour tasting of four types of Kompel beer.

The Museum van de mijnwerkerswoning is located in a semi-detached house dating from 1925 and offers insights into the lives of miners in the 1930s. Visits are possible by reservation through Stichting Erfgoed Eisden. In addition, the 5-kilometre interactive Eisden-Tuinwijk heritage walk uses old photographs and visual material to tell the story of the coal mine, its cité and its residents. The headframes of Eisden can be climbed to a height of 24 metres and offer wide views over the green region.

Leut, Mills and Special Destinations

Leut can be discovered through its natural and cultural features. The protected cemetery in the village centre contains the underground foundations of the old church, gravestones, the iron grille and a monumental tree. Kasteel Vilain XIIII between Leut and Meeswijk has been protected as a monument by ministerial decree since 7 December 1987. Its landscape park extends to the Meuse and offers views of up to 800 metres. The Bomenwandeling through the park starts at the castle car park and is 3 kilometres long from there. If no activity is taking place at Kasteel van Leut, you can also take a short circular walk through the castle park.

Other cultural and historical features include the Nieuw Leven windmill, an early modern grain mill from the early 19th century. It is built as a wooden post mill with a semi-open base. The milling equipment has been preserved, and the old structure of the mill housing is almost completely intact. The Railway Brick Museum in Leut’s former artisan bakery contains themed trains that work and can be switched on by visitors themselves. On the Meuse, a kayak trip combines rapids, nature and relaxation; Konik horses or Galloway cattle, for example, can be spotted along the way.
