Bocholt Between Canals, Nature and History
Accommodation in Bocholt
Bocholt lies at the intersection of the Zuid-Willemsvaart and the Bocholt-Herentals Canal. Cycle paths along canals, circular trails through natural areas and distinctive buildings offer different perspectives on the town. If you are looking for a holiday apartment in Bocholt, you can plan your stay around whether outdoor activities, local history or regional traditions are your main interests.
Cycle Routes and Landscapes
The Rond-in-Bocholt cycle route is a 40-kilometre loop. It starts at Lock 18 and leads through natural areas and along canals. The Boerderijenroute starts elsewhere: at the Biotechnicum in the centre of Bocholt, it runs mostly along quiet, paved roads or cycle paths. Another 20-kilometre cycle route passes Bocholt’s four church villages, focusing on historic buildings and local sights. The distances provide a concrete basis for comparing routes when planning your trip; route details may change, so check them before setting off.
On foot, seven circular trails lead through the Smeetshof-Wijffelterbroek area. The Smeetshof nature development project created new marshland, restored heathland and established amphibian ponds, wet and dry meadows, and scattered woodland. In the Bocholt area, five more circular trails lead through the Mariahof–De Luysen area: this 40-hectare pond area has three birdwatching hides. There is a choice of landscapes and trails, from marsh and heathland to a pond area.
Churches, Mills and Local History
The present-day Sint-Laurentiuskerk was added to a 1411 marl tower in 1476 in the late Gothic style. The Torenverplaatsingsmuseum also explores the history of this tower, documenting its relocation by 9.4 metres over the course of eight days. Photos, plans and documents present the events surrounding the tower’s relocation in 1910. The Klootsmolen and the Voorste Luysmolen, two former watermills, also remain along the Abeek in Bocholt.
In Kaulille, the Sevensmolen and its surroundings have been classified as a protected monument and a protected village scene since 1994. A historical outing can therefore be combined with an insight into a local baking tradition: the site’s traditional Kempische oven hosts workshops where participants bake bread and vlaai together using produce from their own region. Everyone is welcome on the open baking day, held on the fourth Saturday of each month from April to October; visits are also possible by appointment. Check seasonal dates before travelling.
