Wachtebeke

Wachtebeke combines forests, water, polder landscapes and remarkable cultural experiences. Landscape between Forest and Wetland

The northern and largest part of Wachtebeke belongs to the Flemish Sandy Region and lies at an altitude of 4 to 7 metres. The relief is flat, but alternates between dry ridges and damp hollows. Partly wooded areas and remnants of higher-lying heathland recall the region's varied landscape history; originally, there were numerous peat-rich marshes here. The 124-hectare Het Kloosterbos forest provides a striking natural feature within this landscape.

The area around the Grote Kreek and Pereboomsgat in the north of Wachtebeke and Moerbeke-Waas also reflects the character of the region. Here you will find remnants of creeks, reed-fringed banks, dykes and polder landscapes accentuated by rows of trees. The western branch of the Grote Kreek offers beautiful views. In the Sint-Elooispolder, dykes run along the Dutch border and southwards along the former “Wachtebeke Dijk”, now called Overslagdijk.

Moervaart and Zilverroute

The Moervaart crosses Wachtebeke from west to east. It is the canalised northern branch of the Durme and a tributary of the Scheldt. It was formerly used for freight transport and is now mainly used for recreational boating. The Moervaart is accessible to boats with a maximum draught of 1.50 metres. The relevant moorings are located on the right bank, 50 metres downstream from the Overledebrug to the Langelede in the Wachtebeke district.

If you prefer to experience waterscapes on land, you can include the Zilverroute in central Wachtebeke in your plans. The route is wheelchair-accessible and has sufficient places to rest. This provides a practical way to explore the local landscape at a more leisurely pace. Windmill Model, Park and Church Architecture

The large model is 5.5 metres high, measures more than 11 metres across its sails and can actually grind grain. The Puyenbroeck landscape park covers around fifty hectares and adds to the selection of landscape-focused experiences.

Wachtebeke's cultural heritage also includes the Sint-Catharina parish church. This Gothic, three-aisled brick hall church dates mainly from the 15th and 16th centuries. Its architectural form creates a clear contrast with the surrounding open polders, forests and wetlands.
