In Landen, various discoveries lead from archaeological traces to historic churches, an old mill and trails through open fields and a valley. When planning your trip, you can first consider which themes you would like to shape your stay: early history and church art, walks between villages, a longer cycling tour or playful activities.

Archaeological traces and church art

The Sinte Gitter archaeological park includes the choir ruins of the first Sint-Gertrudiskerk, dating from the 8th century. The site also contains two feudal motte mounds known as Heynsberg and Tombe van Pepijn. You can visit the archaeological site for free through the tourist information office; arrange the visiting details in advance. This makes it possible to combine your visit with a look at the town’s early history.

The parish church of Sint-Amandus also tells the story of earlier building history: it was built largely in the second half of the 13th century. Its sandstone block altar is decorated with geometric motifs. On the Zevenbronnenwandeling, you can enter the Sint-Amanduskerk in Wezeren and see its distinctive Romanesque block altar. Here, architecture becomes a tangible part of the walk rather than just a separate sightseeing stop.

Walking through villages and countryside

The Pepijnwandeling is a rural walk between Overwinden and Waasmont that starts at the Sinte Gitter archaeological site. Along the way, it passes the Plattetombe van Pepijn, a Gallo-Roman burial mound. The route and the archaeological site give the walk a clear historical connection.

The Zevenbronnenwandeling has a different focus: it connects Walsbets, Wezeren and Walshoutem through open fields and the Zevenbronnen valley. The named villages and the landscape together shape the character of this route. A stop at the church in Wezeren adds a glimpse of Romanesque church art to the walk.

De Beemden is a nature and recreation area of about 6.5 hectares. The area was once made up of hay meadows and pastures; later, the owner at the time had ponds dug. De Beemden also has a red walking route. The walking options therefore offer different experiences: village connections and open countryside on the one hand, and an area with its own landscape history on the other.

Cycling tour, mill and playful activities

The Landense route starts at the Bezoekerscentrum Rufferdinge in Landen, is 41.6 kilometres long and crosses the Kleine Gete twice. Its length offers a different scale from the walks described above. When planning your holiday days, you can choose between a longer cycling tour and routes whose appeal lies mainly in the villages, landscapes or historic stops.

Rufferdinge is also connected with the history of a rare grain mill in Landen, which remained in operation until 1966. The Belevingscentrum Rufferdinge also offers the interactive treasure hunt “Sabotage in de molen”. The history of the mill and hands-on fun come together here. The Blotevoetenpad en avonturenpark Landen offers a different experience, with a playful barefoot animal trail and balance obstacles made from giant tree trunks.

When choosing a holiday apartment in Landen, it may help to decide first what you would like to focus on. Are you most interested in archaeological and church heritage, walks through villages and countryside, or cycling and playful activities? These interests can guide your search without requiring every holiday day to be the same.
