In Halle, the range of experiences extends from a Neo-Palladian villa and medieval pilgrimage history to walking and cycling routes that connect the city’s history with the landscape. Museums, brewery visits and recurring processions also give the town a variety of facets. When planning your trip, it is worth considering which themes you want to shape your stay: cultural history, nature or a mix of both.

Architecture, Pilgrimage History and Traditions

Villa Servais was designed in the Neo-Palladian style in 1847 by the architect Jean-Pierre Cluysenaar. Its history extends beyond its construction: it became a meeting place for local and international musicians and artists. The villa represents a cultural side of Halle that appeals both to architecture enthusiasts and to travellers interested in the artistic life of a place.

The Sint-Martinusbasiliek houses a black, miraculous image of the Virgin Mary dating from the 13th century, which attracted numerous pilgrims as early as the Middle Ages. The Vaantjesboer statue offers a different perspective on the tradition of processions: it symbolises the traders who sold pennants to pilgrims during the procession. Halle Carnival includes the grand Saturday procession, the torchlight procession, the Krottenmaandag procession and the traditional election of the Prince. The Sint-Veroonmars also takes place every year in Lembeek, a district of the city of Halle. Religious history, carnival and an annual tradition thus coexist, each with its own story.

The History of Malt and Brewery Visits

Museum den AST is housed in the restored Van Roye malt house. Its interactive trail follows the malting process step by step and illustrates the heyday of the malt house through personal accounts. This makes the visit especially interesting for anyone who wants not only to see a historic building but also to learn what work in a malt house involved.

At Brouwerij Boon, a specific detail about production adds to the visitor experience: the beer matures in 161 large oak barrels. A guided tour includes a tasting of three beers. As visit formats and booking conditions may change, check the current details before making plans.

Brouwerij Den Herberg can also be visited daily by appointment. Afterwards, visitors can try a beer of their choice at the Herberg. Since an appointment is required, arrange your visit in advance.

Parks, Forests and Routes

Albertpark has renewed paths and a Zenne terrace. Hallerbos offers a different perspective on the landscape: this 552-hectare forest is a remnant of the ancient Kolenwoud forest. The two places have different features—park paths and a terrace at one, and a vast forest with historical ties to an ancient woodland at the other.

The routes also differ in character. The Weg-Om walk is fully signposted with themed signs and connects several chapels in the centre of Halle with the fields just outside the city. The Hallerbosroute is a cycling route that links the nature of Hallerbos with the cultural heritage of the city of Halle and the leisure facilities at Provinciedomein Huizingen. Those planning a signposted walk between chapels and fields will find a different theme here from that of a cycling tour bringing together forest, urban heritage and leisure facilities.

Choose the Right Focus for Your Trip

When looking for a holiday rental in Halle, you can start with your interests: do you want cultural sites, pilgrimage history and the malt house to take centre stage, or would you rather focus more on parks, forests and routes? The places you visit and activities you choose give your trip different emphases, without implying anything about the accommodation’s particular location or amenities. If you want to include several themes, you can organise your outings around your interests and decide more purposefully which experiences will shape your stay.
