Sint-Amands on the Scheldt: Culture, Trails and Traditions

Sint-Amands combines the landscape of the Scheldt with literature, milling culture and vibrant local traditions. The Scheldt banks officially belong to the Scheldt Valley National Park. Trails lead through green areas to scenic spots, with resting places such as picnic benches inviting you to take a break along the way. River Landscape and Literary Heritage

The Emile Verhaeren Museum is a literary museum dedicated entirely to the French-speaking poet and art critic Emile Verhaeren (1855–1916). In 1997, under the direction of curator Paul Servaes (1995–2001), the museum moved into a renovated building next to Verhaeren's birthplace. This makes the history of the area especially tangible for literature enthusiasts, without limiting the trip to a single theme.

You will also encounter references to Verhaeren at the old Scheldt quay. The quay was transformed into a kind of promenade terrace. At its centre stands a life-size bronze statue of Emile Verhaeren from 1985, created by Leopold Van Esbroeck. De Veerman is a metal artwork by Mark Macken from 1966, created after Verhaeren's poem Le Passeur d'Eau. The poet's monumental tomb monument is also located along the Scheldt.

Mills, Monuments and Historical Traces

A special place to visit is the Gansakkermolen, a wooden post mill dating from 1797. It stood for centuries at the Gansakker in Geel and was rebuilt in 2024 on an existing mill mound in Puurs-Sint-Amands. From 14 September 2025 to 27 December 2026, the mill can be visited free of charge every second and fourth Sunday of the month from 13:00 to 17:00. During guided visits, trained millers demonstrate how grain is made into flour. You should take these fixed visiting hours into account when planning your day if mill technology is one of your interests.

The historic character of the area also includes the listed parish church of Sint-Amands and Den Dam. The narrow, curved street connects the church and the Kouter, was paved in 1868 and has largely preserved its original architectural character. The Onze-Lieve-Vrouw ten Donkere Chapel is also a protected monument. It is a late Gothic building from the early 17th century and is one of the oldest surviving buildings in Sint-Amands.

Traditions at the Chapel and along the Scheldt

Those interested in local customs can include the annual horse blessing and riders' procession at the chapel in their travel plans. It takes place on the first Sunday after 29 June and continues to include the popular tradition of laying a sand carpet. Sint-Amands also preserves traces of its economic past: from the 18th century onwards, Steenovens was an economic centre with a ferry service, bleachery, inn and farm. The Veerhuis on the quay of Sint-Amands has been a landmark on the Scheldt since the 18th century.
