Culture and History

The Church of the Resurrection has been documented since the 16th century and was rebuilt in 2009. The Church of the Annunciation was built in the 1130s and is one of the oldest surviving stone buildings in Belarus. In 1992, it was restored to its original historical appearance and now serves as a church.

The Church of Saint Barbara was built in 1785. It is an important architectural monument of the 18th century and the only surviving historic Catholic church in Vitebsk.

Art and Museums

The Vitebsk Centre for Contemporary Art was founded to preserve the traditions of the Vitebsk Art School and the legacy of Marc Chagall, Kazimir Malevich and UNOVIS. The Vitebsk Regional Museum of Local Lore presents archaeological material on ancient Vitebsk, an exhibition on the nature of Vitebsk Region, as well as temporary exhibitions and scientific programmes; the main museum is located in the town hall.

The Marc Chagall Museum Complex in Vitebsk consists of an art centre and a house museum. The interior of the Marc Chagall House Museum was reconstructed using archival documents. Around 200 original paintings by the artist are exhibited at the Marc Chagall Art Centre.

Cityscape and Events

The Duhovsky Kruglik in Vitebsk is a reconstructed, stylised medieval tower and part of a city tour. The Vitebsk Summer Amphitheatre is a concert venue where the Slavianski Bazaar in Vitebsk art festival takes place.

Nature and Trails

Pyat’desyat Let Sovetskoy Armii Park is located in the immediate vicinity of Vitebsk. At the Park of the Soviet Army, roller skates, skateboards, bicycles for excursions and skis are available for seasonal rental.

Ostrov Bol’shoy is an island in the wider regional area around Vitebsk. The Vitebsk stage of the “Two Sisters—Belarus and Russia” route can be travelled by bus, minibus, car or on foot.
