Ober-Grafendorf offers a variety of ways to spend your days away: the Pielachtal Cycle Route combines cycling with the Mariazell Railway, while swimming and exercise take centre stage at Ebersdorfer See. There is also railway history, church art and a bookable guided experience at World of STYX. If you are looking for a holiday apartment, you can plan your stay around what interests you most—perhaps a cycling tour, a day by the water or cultural discoveries.

Cycling with a railway connection

The Pielachtal Cycle Route can be enjoyed along various sections. From Ebersdorf, it runs along the Pielach to the underpass at the Pielach Bridge in Ober-Grafendorf. Between Ober-Grafendorf and Loich, the cycle route follows the Mariazell Railway; on this section, you can combine a cycling trip with a train journey. You can also travel to the “Around Ober-Grafendorf” cycling tour by Mariazell Railway, with bicycle transport available, from St. Pölten or in the direction of Mariazell. This means you can plan the tour based both on its route and on your rail travel arrangements.

The town’s transport links are also relevant when planning a holiday: Ober-Grafendorf is accessible via the B39 and by Mariazell Railway. If you are pairing your holiday apartment search with specific excursion plans, consider whether cycling and rail travel or other experiences will shape your stay. This does not include details about individual holiday apartments; choosing accommodation remains a separate decision.

Water and exercise at Ebersdorfer See

Ebersdorfer See is ideal for swimming and cooling off; its water quality is described as very good. The beach volleyball and football courts can be used free of charge. For a more active outing, the Jungle Ropes Course on the lake’s north shore is right beside the cycle route. It has two high ropes courses, each with ten stations of varying difficulty, as well as three zip lines. One of them runs 70 metres above the lake.

The Jungle Ropes Course is scheduled to operate seasonally from March to November. Check whether it is open before visiting; advance booking by phone is also required. These conditions can help you fit the outing into your daily plans. The lake offers a different kind of visit as well: swimming and cooling off complement the sports courts, while the ropes course puts its stations and zip lines centre stage.

Church art and railway history

Ober-Grafendorf Parish Church is a three-aisled Gothic pillar basilica dating from the 14th century. Its notable features include the Baroque high altar made of red Türnitz marble and the high altar painting from 1756, created by the Baroque painter Daniel Gran. The different periods can be seen in the architecture and furnishings: the church dates from the Middle Ages, while the altar and painting add Baroque touches.

The Mh.6 locomotive shed offers another glimpse into railway history. It displays historic Mariazell Railway vehicles, including locomotives and freight wagons. The Krumpe connecting railway begins approximately near the railway crossing on Bildgansstraße in Ober-Grafendorf and runs as far as the municipal boundary between St. Margarethen and Bischofstetten. Public special services on the Krumpe are scheduled for selected days; running dates are published separately. If a special service might be part of your visit, check the published dates.

The Schloss Fridau complex comprises the New Castle, the Old Castle, the Chancellery building and the garden pavilion. The complex is privately owned. Together with the parish church and railway exhibits, it offers a cultural contrast to more active days at the lake or on the cycle route.

Guided tours and dining

Bookable guided tours at World of STYX offer insights into how natural cosmetics are made and include a tasting of handmade organic chocolate. This is a distinct focus alongside cycling, water and railways: rather than centring on a route or exhibition, the experience focuses on production and enjoyment.

At Mostheurigen Moderbacher, you can enjoy homemade specialities from Mostbaron Moderbacher in the wine tavern, the winter garden or the spacious garden. Opening days and hours are published separately; check them before your visit. This makes it easy to include a meal in your daily plans without tying it to a particular excursion. When searching for a holiday apartment, it may help to first decide which of these different activities interests you most and how you would like to spend your days away.
