Discover Neulengbach: Castle, Schiele Trails and Cycling Routes
Accommodation in Neulengbach
Neulengbach offers a diverse mix of history, excursions and outdoor activities. Neulengbach Castle, traces of Egon Schiele, fourteen cycling routes and paths through the countryside open up a range of options for planning your trip. Those travelling with different interests can choose between cultural activities, a cycling tour, a walk, scenic views and an outdoor swimming pool, and look for the right holiday apartment based on the focus of their holiday.
Castle History and Schiele Trails
One striking historical detail is the defensive wall of Neulengbach Castle: it is more than 500 metres long. During a two-hour guided tour of the castle, the route includes the fortifications, the inner courtyard, the main castle and an exhibition. This means the visit can easily be planned as a separate item on your itinerary without equating the tour with other activities.
Egon Schiele is also connected with Neulengbach. The Egon Schiele Trail leads through Neulengbach past eight information points and ends in the courtyard of the old courthouse. There, Egon Schiele was held until 30 April 1912 in cell no. 2 of the Neulengbach District Court. Another historical landmark is the Laurenzi Church in Markersdorf, which dates back to the 12th century. At the ruins of Raipoltenbach Water Castle, the moats and three of the four corner towers have been preserved.
Cycling Routes, Paths and Views
For active days, Neulengbach offers fourteen cycling routes to choose from. The Laabental Cycle Path runs for 15.8 kilometres along the Laabenbach River. Another way to explore the area is the KulTOURpfad Neulengbach, with fourteen information stations. Outside the town centre, it follows rivers, meadows and fields without any significant climbs. This allows you to choose when planning your day between a longer cycling tour and a route whose described course has no significant climbs.
The “Buchberg via Laurenzikirche, Neulengbach” hiking tour starts at Neulengbach Stadt railway station. From the Buchberg lookout tower, views extend from the Ötscher to the Waldviertel region. The 22.5-metre-high lookout tower was built in 2004 using modern timber construction. This combination of a hiking destination, scenic views and an architectural feature gives Buchberg a distinctive place among the excursion options.
Outdoor Swimming and Museums for Different Days
Neulengbach Outdoor Pool offers swimming fun for people of all ages and is located directly on the Laabental Cycle Path. It is a 15-minute walk from the Neulengbach Stadt ÖBB stop.
The “eitle Kinderkram” museum focuses on different themes depending on the season: in summer, visitors can see a LEGO® exhibition with more than 2,200 sets. In winter, the museum offers retro video games such as Super Nintendo and Sega Megadrive, as well as old Commodore and Windows computers to try out. The pinball exhibition also features more than 130 machines, 11 of which can be played.
At the MUSEUM Region Neulengbach, you should note the special opening arrangements: there is no permanent exhibition. The museum is open only during current exhibitions; opening hours are announced as part of each event.
