Frankenfels combines impressive natural experiences with insights into the history and everyday life of the region. The Nix Cave, marked trails to viewpoints, climbing areas, a mountain farming museum and special excursion destinations offer various ways to spend your days. When choosing your holiday apartment, it is therefore worth considering first whether you would mainly like to combine caves, hikes, culture, physical activities or varied activities with several generations.

Nature between caves, gorges and viewpoints

One of Frankenfels's special features is the Nix Cave in Frankenfels. The dripstone cave consists of snow-white mountain milk, is 1,410 m long and has an elevation difference of 70 m. Guided tours for groups are possible at any time by prior arrangement. If you would like to include this experience in your plans, you can coordinate the desired visit with your travel planning well in advance.

The landscape is also varied above ground. The Falkenstein plateau lies at an elevation of 720 m and offers views over the town of Frankenfels, the Frankenfelsberg opposite and the Natterstal Valley. Numerous marked walking and hiking trails also lead from Frankenfels to viewpoints above 1,000 m in elevation, with views of the Ötscher area. The trails thus offer different perspectives on the landscape without requiring you to commit to just one type of excursion.

The Taubenbach Gorge has hiking trails and a forest nature trail. Those who want to consciously take in the surroundings while hiking, rather than focusing only on a destination, will find another natural highlight here for their trip. For active days, Frankenfels also offers four climbing areas with around 200 routes of all difficulty levels.

Culture, Legends and Regional Insights

The Hausstein Mountain Farming Museum displays around 2,000 exhibits on 400 m² covering crafts, household life, agriculture and everyday life on a mountain farm. A visit to the museum complements the natural experiences with concrete insights into past working and living environments. Especially when different interests come together in your travel group, this allows you to combine a day outdoors with a cultural focus.

Frankenfels is part of the Pielachtal Valley, which is also known as the Dirndltal Valley. On the Legends Hiking Trail from Frankenfels via Puchenstuben and St. Anton an der Jeßnitz, you can explore stories about the origins of the valley, relics from times gone by and legends from earlier eras. At the Dirndl-Mostheuriger Hausstein, “Sterz der Holzknechte” or Feuerflecken are prepared over an open fire by prior arrangement. Alongside landscapes and physical activity, such regional offerings give the trip a culinary and storytelling dimension.

Excursions with Different Focuses

The Frankenfels outdoor pool has a 33 m-long water slide and is located between tennis courts, a beach volleyball court and a children's playground. If you are travelling with children or in a larger group, this allows you to incorporate different leisure interests into your daily planning. Another option is the Mariazell Railway Operations Centre in Laubenbachmühle: Guided tours are available on request, last around 50 minutes and must be registered at the NÖVOG information centre at least two weeks before the desired date.

A holiday apartment in Frankenfels is particularly suited to your plans if you would like to combine nature, culture and changing day-trip destinations. If you place the Nix Cave or the viewpoints at the centre of your plans, take the time required for them into account when planning your trip. For a culturally focused stay, the museum, Legends Hiking Trail and the tour in Laubenbachmühle can be combined in different ways. Each of the excursion destinations mentioned has its own focus, allowing you to plan your days flexibly according to your interests and the weather.
