Unterwölbling brings together late Gothic sacred architecture, a wayside shrine linked to the former lignite mine and archaeological evidence of early settlement. These varied themes offer several ways to discover the place: through its architecture and art, its local history or scenic walking routes. Two hiking descriptions focus on different experiences—a long loop passing wayside shrines and a roughly one-hour walk to Kleiner Anzingerberg.

Late Gothic Church and Altarpiece

The filial church in Unterwölbling is dedicated to Saint Vitus and is a late Gothic, three-nave church. “Three-nave” describes the division of the church interior into three naves. This connects a distinctive feature of its design with its dedication to Saint Vitus. The church is also a fortified complex comprising a fortified church tower, a fortified church and a fortified churchyard: the tower, church building and courtyard together form an architectural ensemble.

Another point of interest is the left side altar. Its altarpiece is by Martin Johann Schmidt and was probably created around 1750. The late Gothic architectural style and the painting, which is only approximately dated, point to different periods in art history. Visitors interested in both sacred architecture and art can therefore appreciate the church from more than one perspective.

Barbara Wayside Shrine and Mining History

At the edge of Unterwölbling, the Barbara wayside shrine stands right beside the farm track to the Ried Leithen. In its barred niche is a statue of Saint Barbara holding a pointed pick. The shrine is connected with the former lignite mine in neighbouring Anzenhof. The pointed pick provides a vivid motif for this connection; at the same time, its position beside the farm track links a small place of remembrance with local history. Those who look out for religious roadside shrines while travelling will also find here a reminder of the former mining industry in the neighbouring village.

Archaeological Traces from Different Periods

Neolithic finds in Unterwölbling point to early human settlement. A group of burial mounds was found northeast of the village on a spur of the Sichelhengst. Early Bronze Age crouched burials are attributed to the Únětice culture and bear the special designation “Unterwölbling.” Different archaeological periods are thus represented side by side: finds indicating early settlement and a named burial type from the Early Bronze Age. The place name appears here not only as a travel destination, but also in a distinctive archaeological designation.

Hiking: Wayside Shrine Loop or Kleiner Anzingerberg

The longer version of the 2nd Rund-Marterlwanderweg Wölbling leads from Oberwölbling past three wayside shrines on the Flötzersteig to Unterwölbling and back again. A route description dated 17 May 2021 describes this loop. Check local trail conditions before setting out.

A route description dated 6 September 2021 gives a walking time of about one hour for the hike from Unterwölbling to Kleiner Anzingerberg. The starting point is the filial church; the route is neither signposted nor marked. Plan to use navigation aids and check local conditions here as well. In good visibility, the view extends across the Fladnitztal and beyond to the Alpine foothills.

The two descriptions can help with different considerations: the longer loop focuses on passing several wayside shrines and returning to the starting point. For the walk to Kleiner Anzingerberg, the approximate duration, lack of signage and visibility-dependent views are important planning factors. This lets you decide in advance which route best fits your day, without assuming that both hikes offer the same kind of experience.
