Korneuburg combines a distinctive urban history with cycle paths, Danube floodplains and everyday experiences. Anyone looking for a mix of historic buildings, regional culture and active pursuits for their holiday will find various starting points here for planning their trip. The choice of a holiday apartment or other accommodation may depend on whether you primarily want to explore the townscape, get around by bicycle or take excursions into the surrounding area.

Historic Buildings in the Townscape

A prominent landmark is the medieval town tower, which is integrated into Korneuburg Town Hall. It was built in the first half of the 15th century above the choir of the former Nikolaikirche and completed around 1445. Following extensive restoration work from 1888 to 1890, the town tower housed the town’s first museum. Today, the tower offers wide-ranging views of Korneuburg and the surrounding area. It therefore combines a historical insight with a special perspective of the town.

The Augustinian Church also takes visitors through several periods of the town’s history. Its late Baroque appearance resulted from the rebuilding carried out from 1745 to 1763. From 1764 onwards, Franz Anton Maulbertsch created most of the altarpieces; his fresco “The Last Supper” is located on the high altar. The parish church of St. Ägyd has a Gothic choir from the 14th century and a Gothic sacrament house donated in 1382. The Baroque Trinity Column depicts Saints Aegidius, John the Baptist and James the Elder. Its chronogram gives the year 1778. The column is a plague column and was donated in 1747 by the Korneuburg merchant Johann Michael Jochinger.

The former synagogue “Rossmühle” is also part of the medieval past. It was built in the first half or the second third of the 14th century and was the centre of Jewish life. Today, it is considered one of the most important examples of medieval synagogue architecture in the German-speaking region. Of the former town wall, which was 1,650 metres long, 278 metres remain; the surviving wall is up to 5 metres high. The Ratcatcher Fountain, erected in 1898, complements the historic townscape. The statue of the ratcatcher was created by the sculptor Emanuel Pendl.

Museum, Market and Local History

The Korneuburg Town Museum is designed and operated by the Korneuburg Museum Association. Numerous ship models document the importance of the former shipyard to the town. This focus makes it clear that Korneuburg’s history was shaped not only by churches, fortifications and medieval buildings, but also by its connection to shipping.

The Korneuburg weekly market is also worthwhile for travel planning with a regional character. It offers regional products on Tuesdays and Fridays from 6:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The market can therefore be planned as a separate morning activity and complements the cultural and historical impressions with an insight into the local offering. Families wishing to combine different interests can plan historic sites, the museum and the market as separate discoveries.

Cycle Paths and the Danube Floodplain Landscape

Korneuburg is connected to several cycling experiences. The “Legendary route around Kreuzenstein Castle” cycle path connects several municipalities in the 10 vor Wien region, including Korneuburg. One themed stop along this cycle path is “The Ratcatcher in Korneuburg”. Korneuburg is also located on Stage 7 of the Danube Cycle Path. Anyone who enjoys combining longer cycling excursions with cultural stops can take both options into account when planning their trip without making the holiday revolve around just one theme.

The natural landscape of the Danube floodplains surrounds Korneuburg. This means that a stay can also be combined with impressions beyond the historic town centre. Korneuburg also has a beach volleyball court. Alongside history and cycling, this provides further options for an active day.

The Right Base for Your Trip

Local transport options include rail, town and regional bus connections, a youth shuttle bus, e-scooters, e-bikes, nextbike bicycles, electric cargo bikes, E-Car, E-Carsharing, EV charging stations and a taxi service. Getting around by bicycle is also possible. This choice can help when deciding on a holiday apartment: Consider whether you want to spend your days mainly exploring urban history, taking cycling excursions, experiencing the landscape or combining these activities in changing ways. Korneuburg offers several clearly distinct approaches to travel without requiring you to commit to a single type of holiday.
