Großrußbach lies in the Rußbach Valley, nestled in the gentle hills of the Weinviertel. The village combines varied hiking and cycling experiences with historic churches, castles and regional cuisine. If you are looking for a holiday apartment or holiday home for your trip, it is worth first deciding how you would like to spend your holiday: Would you like to explore the short routes around the Trift, plan a longer hiking stage, discover historic buildings or sample regional products?

Hiking and Cycling in the Weinviertel Hills

Two hiking trails begin at the Trift near Großrußbach. They are 5.09 and 5.49 kilometres long respectively, providing two clearly defined routes for planning a day out. Another hiking route starts at the church in Weinsteig. It leads through the forest past historically significant sites towards Kreuttal and then returns to the church. Those who enjoy combining different tours can choose these trails according to their preferred starting point and the respective distance.

The market town also offers opportunities for cycling tours. The cycling routes connect Großrußbach, Weinsteig, Kleinebersdorf and Karnabrunn. This makes it possible to plan a varied stay combining hikes, cycling excursions and cultural stops, catering to a range of interests. The second day of the summit tour from Mistelbach to Stockerau begins in Großrußbach and leads via Michelberg and Waschberg to Stockerau.

Churches and Historic Buildings

The parish church of Großrußbach is a listed historic church dedicated to Saint Valentine. It was built in the 15th century as a Late Gothic hall church and was originally designed as a fortified church. Großrußbach Castle, a historic grand building, also stands below the parish church.

Weinsteig is home to a listed Roman Catholic branch church dedicated to Saints Peter and Paul. Its origins lie in a Romanesque building; in the 14th century, it was rebuilt in the Gothic style. The history of this place can easily be combined with the hiking route that begins there and leads through the forest towards Kreuttal.

Another prominent cultural landmark is the Trinity Church in Karnabrunn. It stands in the Karnabrunn Forest on the summit of Stainmeißelberg and was built between 1684 and 1686. A fully renovated staircase more than 200 metres long leads up to the church, flanked by six historic stone figures. The church lies along the Weinviertel Way of St. James. Karnabrunn is also home to Karnabrunn Castle, a well-preserved moated castle with a moat, corner bastions and a tower.

Regional Products in the Trift

The Großrußbach cellar lane, also known as the Trift, is part of the local character of this Weinviertel village. The Großrußbach farmers’ market brings 15 producers together in the Kellertrift. Products on offer include bread, pastries, honey, schnapps, liqueurs, pasta, pickled vegetables, seasonal fruit and vegetables, as well as wine. When planning your accommodation, you can therefore also consider whether regional foods and products should play a role in shaping your holiday days.

The Right Accommodation for Planning Your Trip
