Ernstbrunn: Hiking Trails, Wildlife Park and History
Accommodation in Ernstbrunn
Ernstbrunn offers a range of ways to spend your stay, whether enjoying outdoor activities, observing wildlife or discovering history. A circular hiking trail and a children’s adventure trail are complemented by the Weinviertel draisine, the wildlife park and cultural attractions. A weekly farmers’ market adds another distinctive touch. When planning, it is worth first considering which of these experiences you would like to shape your days.
Hiking, Wildlife and Mountain Biking
The Kalkstein Loop is an easy 13.02-kilometre circular hike. It starts and ends at Ernstbrunn’s main square. The Ernsti Children’s Adventure Trail, by contrast, begins at Ernstbrunn railway station and leads to the children’s railway. This gives you two different types of route to choose from: a loop with a fixed start and finish, or a trail whose destination is the children’s railway.
For mountain biking, the Leiser Berge Mountain Bike Arena near Ernstbrunn includes several named routes. These include Oberleis Classic, Leiser Hills Tour and Wildpark Wolfsrunde. At Ernstbrunn Wildlife Park, you can observe red deer, fallow deer, sika deer and mouflons in walk-through enclosures. The wildlife park also has a playground by Ziegelofenteich. This combines wildlife watching with a dedicated playground, while the hiking and mountain biking routes offer their own distinct experiences.
Adventure Tour and Draisine Ride
The Wolf Science Center’s 1.5-hour adventure tour offers insights into research and the daily work with wolves and dogs. The highlight is a short presentation featuring a wolf, with people and animals in action. This makes the tour a distinct option for anyone interested in working with animals and in research.
The Weinviertel draisine route runs from Ernstbrunn to Asparn an der Zaya. On the stretch from Ernstbrunn to Grafensulz, the track climbs gently. Along the way, you can enjoy a view of the Weinviertel hill country; the ride then descends into the Zaya Valley. The route can therefore be described not only by its endpoints, but also by its course.
Museum, Castle and Historic Sites
The Ernstbrunn Local History Museum offers a tour through the history of the Ernstbrunn area. Exhibits include finds from prehistoric times, the Middle Ages, the past two centuries and the present day. A dedicated art and culture room features temporary exhibitions as well as individual works on permanent display. The tour thus covers a broad historical span and includes both changing and permanent displays.
Ernstbrunn Castle is a building with four romantic inner courtyards. Construction of the entire complex spans the 11th to the 18th century. The pilgrimage church of Maria Oberleis offers a different historical focus: it was built around 1050 and lies on the Weinviertel Way of St James.
Oberleiser Berg also has a long history of settlement. Archaeological finds show that it has been inhabited since prehistoric times. In the Iron Age, from around 800 to 15 BC, an important Celtic hilltop settlement developed there, serving as a place to live and a trading post.
Heilbründl in Bründl was first mentioned in historical records in 1432 and was already being used for cures at that time. The small Marienbründl Chapel was built in 1837 in memory of the healing spring. Together, these two dates show the difference in time between the spring’s traditional use and the later memorial building.
Market and Accommodation Planning
The Simonsfeld Farmers’ Market is a weekly market for local direct sales. It offers regional vegetables, wine, bread, pastries, schnapps and honey, as well as products from sheep, goats and pigs. Regional handicrafts add to the selection. The market therefore features both food and handmade products.
You can also take your journey into account when planning: Ernstbrunn is accessible from Vienna via Korneuburg on the ErlebnisZug Leiser Berge. If you plan to use this connection, check the current timetable in advance. When choosing a holiday apartment in Ernstbrunn, you can first decide how much you want hiking, wildlife watching, the draisine, the market or history to shape your stay. This lets you focus your search on the experiences you actually plan to enjoy.
