Zeillern combines cultural history with trails through a landscape shaped by blossoming fruit trees. The Mostviertel Way of St. James leads directly through the village, while Schlossinsel, the church, the market square and various themed trails offer different ways to experience a stay. If you are looking for a holiday apartment or holiday home, you can consider Zeillern as a starting point for cultural discoveries, walks, pilgrim trails and bike tours.

Culture between Church and Castle

The parish church of St. James was converted into a late Gothic hall church under the Seisenegger family. Inside, the beautifully carved altar stands out. The church therefore offers a specific point of interest for anyone interested in sacred art and the historical development of the village.

Zeillern Castle also shapes the cultural character of the village. The history of Schloss Hotel Zeillern dates back to 863, when King Louis the German gave the grounds to Niederaltaich Abbey. The castle has established itself as an important cultural and musical meeting place. Since 1988, Zeillern has also been home to the Lower Austrian Brass Music Association, which primarily uses the site for further training. The castle courtyard, castle meadow and Schlossinsel provide space for summer festivals, concerts and outdoor seminars.

Trails for Hiking, Pilgrimage and Cycling

The Most Fruit Orchard Hiking Trail begins at the information board on Schlossinsel, opposite Zeillern Castle. Anyone wishing to combine a walk with several themed impressions will find six stations on the Inspiration Trail, each covering a different topic. The stated walking time for this trail is approximately 1.5 to 2 hours. The cultural landscape shaped by blossoming fruit trees is particularly inviting for hiking and cycling in spring.

Zeillern is also located along a route for pilgrims: the Mostviertel Way of St. James leads through the village, and the Sonntagberg Trail branches off here to the south. It leads via Aschbach to Seitenstetten Abbey and onward to Sonntagberg. This allows you to plan your journey around a route that combines religious destinations with physical activity, without having to commit to just one way of exploring the area.

There is also a specific starting point for a cycling tour. Shortly after Zeillern Castle, the Mostbaron Cycling Route continues north towards Stephanshart. Signposted trails maintained by the Zeillern Tourist Association also lead to the Hubertus Chapel, built in 1974, on the edge of the forest.

Places to Relax and Regional Cuisine

For a quieter break, the public Zeillern market square, also known as “Red Square”, is a good option. It offers seating and a drinking fountain that can be used during the frost-free season. On Schlossinsel, beautifully designed footbridges by the water invite you to linger and relax. These two places offer different experiences: the market square is part of public village life, while Schlossinsel provides an opportunity to spend time by the water.

The village forge is also part of the region’s character. It serves down-to-earth, regionally influenced tavern cuisine. The village forge thus complements Zeillern’s cultural and active sides with a regional place to stop for a meal.

Zeillern between Culture and Landscape

For those interested in culture, the church, the history of the castle and the musical tradition are natural travel themes. Those who prefer to stay on the move can focus on the Inspiration Trail, the Mostviertel Way of St. James, the Sonntagberg Trail or the Mostbaron Cycling Route. In spring, the orchard landscape provides a special reason to combine hiking and cycling.
