Discover Ertl: Views, Trails and Local History
Accommodation in Ertl
Ertl offers several ways to shape your holiday: views of the Mostviertel landscape, hiking and cycling routes, and architectural and local history. If you’re looking for a holiday apartment, you can start by considering which of these aspects of the village you’d like to focus on during your stay.
Views and hiking trails
The Voralpenblick lookout tower offers sweeping views across the hilly Mostviertel landscape to the Alpine foothills. If you’d like to make scenic views the focus of a day’s hike, this is a clearly identified destination. The 11.5-kilometre Voralpenblick hiking trail leads to the lookout tower, continues to St. Michael/Bruckbach and returns to Ertl along the Url stream. The stated distance and route sequence provide a concrete framework for planning your day.
Another hiking idea has a natural destination: the Url-Ursprung hiking trail passes the Hubertus Chapel and reaches the source of the Url. The routes therefore have different points of focus: the Voralpenblick trail has a specified distance and returns to Ertl, while the Url-Ursprung trail centres on the chapel and the named source. Which route better suits your holiday depends on whether you’d prefer a trail with a stated distance or one centred on these destinations.
The church and traces of local history
Ertl Parish Church stands in the village centre at the confluence of the Kohlenbach and Url streams. It is a comparatively large Neo-Gothic church. Construction began in 1901 to plans by architect Franz Pichlwanger, and the building was completed in 1913. The church was consecrated to the Holy Family on 26 May 1914. This sequence of construction, completion and consecration gives the building a tangible historical timeline and adds a cultural-history focus to the natural and route-based destinations.
Traces of past use can also be found on Hausnerkogel: the summit area contains the remains of a fortified residence. The terrain was artificially reshaped to build it. The local history here lies not only in the structure itself, but also in the changes to the landscape associated with its construction. Together with the church, these offer two distinct ways to explore the past: a Neo-Gothic church in the village centre and the remains of a structure on the summit of Hausnerkogel.
Cycling routes and getting here
Ertl can also be included in a cycling itinerary. The Stiftsblick cycling route runs via Monument, Ertl and Bruckbach to St. Michael. On the “Around WY” cycling tour, Ertl is a point along the way between other turn-offs. The routes therefore offer different ways to find your way: the Stiftsblick cycling route names a sequence of places, while “Around WY” places Ertl among other directions. If you’d like to include cycling in your stay, you can use these route descriptions alongside the hiking destinations as a guide when planning.
The route information lists trains on the Westbahn line to Seitenstetten–St. Peter/Au, followed by a bus to Ertl. If you plan to travel by train and bus, check the current timetables before setting off. This will help you coordinate your journey with the day plan you’ve chosen for your stay.
Find the right holiday apartment for your stay
When looking for a holiday apartment in Ertl, you can use your planned focus as a guide: will a hike returning to Ertl shape your day, would you like to plan a cycling tour, or are you mainly interested in local history? The destinations listed offer different starting points for making this decision, without requiring you to combine every activity into a single itinerary.
