Discover Wallsee: Roman history, the Danube backwater and regional culture
Accommodation in Wallsee
Wallsee combines Roman history, castle culture, church art and a variety of experiences along the Danube backwater. Those looking for a holiday apartment or holiday home can choose the destination according to their preferred mix of activities: the focus is on historical discoveries, walks through riverside and floodplain landscapes, water sports and regional cuisine.
Experience Roman history vividly
The Roman auxiliary fort in Wallsee was an important fortification along the Danube Limes from around AD 90 until the 5th century. The Wallsee Roman Museum displays local finds from everyday Roman life. Special exhibits include a brick depicting a fish and a vessel used to skim cream from milk. Such details give the history a tangible connection to everyday life.
The Wallsee Roman World presents the remains of a Roman legionary camp at a covered archaeological excavation site. In addition, true-to-life virtual reconstructions of Roman buildings and equipment are presented, including a Roman tavern and a reconstructed watchtower. The Roman World also offers an immersive impression of life in a Late Antique small fort. Guided tours of the Wallsee-Sindelburg Roman World are available by arrangement. This allows you to incorporate your visit specifically into your travel plans.
Castles, churches and living traditions
Nieder-Wallsee Castle was built between 1368 and 1388. Nieder-Wallsee Palace is a representative palace complex with a former 40-metre-high keep. Since 11 June 1895, Nieder-Wallsee has been owned by the Habsburg-Lorraine family; Archduke Franz Salvator and Archduchess Marie Valerie purchased the palace.
The churches in Wallsee-Sindelburg also open up their own historical perspectives. The predecessor of today’s Anna Chapel in the Wallsee market town was founded and built in the 16th century as a guild chapel for the millstone breakers who lived and worked here. Sindelburg Parish Church is a Late Gothic church with a 50-metre-high tower. It preserves an originally intact Late Gothic net-vaulted ceiling as well as four Renaissance epitaphs for the Protestant castle owners of the time and their families. The church was first mentioned in historical records in 1111. On the eastern exterior of the church, at the choir wall, is the family tomb of the Habsburg-Lorraine family.
To this day, three annual local fairs are held in Wallsee’s market square: on 1 May, the Anna Fair on the first Sunday after St Anna’s Day on 26 July, and the Michaelmas Fair on the second Sunday after 29 September. For regional cuisine, the family-friendly inns in Wallsee-Sindelburg offer a wide range of dishes, from traditional home-style cooking to game and fish specialities.
Danube backwater, trails and water sports
The 8-kilometre Danube Backwater Circular Route is available for outdoor exercise. It is suitable for running, walking and hiking. The Danube Backwater Trail passes the water sports centre and runs along the right-hand backwater through riverside and floodplain landscapes with their characteristic plant and animal species. As a sheltered walking and hiking trail along the Old Danube, it offers a different travel focus from the historical sights.
The Wallsee Beach & Water Sports Centre has four beach volleyball courts, including a floodlit centre court. Groups can take barefoot water-skiing lessons there by arrangement. The centre also rents FANATIC stand-up paddleboards by the hour and provides on-site instruction. Those wishing to combine different interests within their travel group can include cultural sightseeing, a walk along the backwater and water sports in their plans.
From the cemetery of Sindelburg Parish Church, there is an expansive view to the north of the neighbouring Mühlviertel region of Upper Austria, the Danube lowlands of the Machland and the town of Wallsee. For hiking trail 421, travel by train to Amstetten station and then by bus to Wallsee-Sindelburg is planned. This information can be taken into account when choosing accommodation and planning your daily itinerary.
Choose Wallsee as your holiday destination
A holiday apartment or holiday home in Wallsee is particularly suited to your travel plans if you do not want to limit your stay to a single sight. You can focus on Roman history and churches, explore the Danube backwater or plan activities at the water sports centre. This allows your choice of accommodation to be linked to your preferred daily rhythm and experiences, without requiring a single, uniform holiday style.
