Sachsenburg lies at an altitude of 552 metres at the entrance to the Drau Valley, amid the largely protected natural landscape of Carinthia’s mountains and lakes. On Schlossberg Hill, the fortifications commemorate the Napoleonic Wars: they were demolished during the French retreat in 1809. Another focal point is Calvary Hill. The Calvary complex consists of fourteen Stations of the Cross and two chapels. The Calvary Chapel was consecrated in 1753, while the Calvary Church is incorporated into the Stations of the Cross as the twelfth station. The Stations of the Cross lead uphill from the parish church to Calvary Hill. From 2016 onwards, they were artistically designed by Carinthian artist Lisa Huber in coloured woodcuts.

The Holy Sepulchre Chapel also offers a distinctive cultural impression. The late Baroque chapel features a life-sized carved body of Christ in the Holy Sepulchre, as well as a Resurrection fresco on the rear wall. The pilgrimage from Sachsenburg to Maria Pirkach is an annual parish tradition. On 13 September 2025, around 100 people took part in the procession and Holy Mass.

Combine art and trails

The Galerie im Drauknie was adapted as a venue for contemporary art in 2012 on the occasion of the celebrations marking “800 Years of Sachsenburg”. It is located in the former forestry office of the Austrian Federal Forests. This special cultural venue complements the village’s historical complexes and sacred buildings. Travellers with varied interests can combine visits to such places with walks or longer sections of trails.

For pilgrims and hikers, the Way of St. James runs from Sachsenburg along the Drau Cycle Path R1 to Lind im Drautal. This section is approximately 7.3 kilometres long.
